I would like to get into some long range shooting, maybe go to some shoots and am looking for a rifle. I have a line on a used Savage 10FP with the mcmillan stock in 308. Wants 875 for the rifle with a set of RCBS comp. dies to go with it. Rifle is in real good shape as the owner took good care of it. Good deal or no. I want to start without having to get a second mortgage. I would like to start shooting more in the 500 to 800 meter range. Do you guys think a guy could do alright with this rig or what. Also what sort of optics would i need. Thanks for any info.

that is a great starter rifle and if it is in good condition the price sounds right. if you are planning on getting into shooting for the long haul i would spend the money on some really good glass(mark4 or a nightforce) but whatever you end up with make sure it has target turrets.

The savages are great. This would be an excellent place to start the long range game. Optics need to fit your budget and intended purpose. Anything in the 4-14 range will allow you to make hits at distance. The variable scopes will let you dial out mirage a bit on heavy days. Some people may argue that more is better. I have had success with a straight fixed 10x Falcon. I also enjoy the use of my Leupold 8.5-25. Practice and more practice is whats required next.

I believe those rifles run $1100 to $1200 new so that sounds like a good price. Get a good +20 MOA rail and good rings and as good a glass as you can afford. If you're budget is limited right now don't feel bad about putting a Bushnell 3200 10x on it. It's a great scope for the money (probbaly under $300) and there's always good resale on them. I'd recommend a Ken Farrell rail (that's what I have on my 10 FP) or a Nightforce rail and Nightforce rings. You can get either from Rick at Alberta Tactical or from Jerry at Mystic Precision. Both are board sponsoring members.

Buy it, I just got a newer shooter to buy almost the same gun to get him into longer range shooting.
Talked him into a NightForce to go with it though, laff.

Yep, try to put the best glass you can on it. Don't be scared to spend as much or more on the scope as you did on the gun.

The Leupold MK4's or the Night Force scope are at the top of my list and have excellent resale just in case long range is not your thing. I have 3 NF's and 3 MK4's and would never sell them. On the other hand I have been through various other long range scopes and still have a few but would sell them in a heart beat if I could get any thing near what I paid for them.

Only alot of practice will make you a good long range shooter but a good scope make's it alot easier. As long as you can afford one, you won't regret it!

I shgould add that I bought the Nightforce that mine wears before I bought the rifle. It's the 3.5-15x50 NXS and I think it's perfect for the 308, though some guys like the 5.5-22x NXS on theirs. I'm looking at you all - Timmins, Shainline(s) and Cicanski and Troy (whatever the hell your last name is)!
