First look. New Tikka T3 TAC A1. Tikkas response to the RPR.

Looks good. It give buyer another option for that type of rifle. The biggest minus for me would be the caliber choice... 308 is good, but its outdated. Something in 6.5 (6.5-47, 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor) would be interesting

I read on another forum that .260 and 6.5 creed will follow once this is released or sale. It would be beyond dumb for them to go after the RPR's market and not offer the same calibres.

The mags will work against them. They should have went with AICS mags. That is the standard now and there are +4 round extenders for AICS mags.

The butt pad is from a TRG-22, as is the muzzle brake as well as the mag (granted they now go for 150$ USD instead of 250$ USD).
Considering that the pre-orders for the new Ranger rifle are 2500$+ I can't see this rifle being any cheaper. Too bad though.
didnt notice the butt pad, but the mag is proprietary from the CTR now, not TRG

Ruger (RPR), Tikka (this thing) and Savage (BA Stealth) all need to make an longer action version of their respective entries, in something like .300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, and maybe .338 Lapua Mag.

Why? they are building this rifles for PRS style matches. An inexpensive/entry level rifle for that sport that's growing big time in the States.

That would have made much more sense. Their TRG/CTR and factory T3 mags are proprietary and over priced. Why would someone want to buy Tikka-only mags when they can have their tikka in a chassis/stock that takes AI mags? you can stick em in your savage/tikka/remington/etc (in aftermarket chassis/stock obviously). And you can keep the AI mags forever, and keep using them in all kinds of different projects in the future, and borrow your friends etc. Tikka wants to make money on their mags, but if people dont buy the gun for that reason they are likely missing out on more profit in the long run. Im betting the price tag is over and above putting your t3 varmint/tactical in a nice chassis and likely not a hell of a lot better of a shooter. Deal breaker.

Ruger was initially going to use a proprietary mag in the RPR, but all of the PRS shooters they consulted told them it needs to be compatible with AICS mags if they want it to be popular. Mags are a consumable, like barrels. You need to replace mags more often when you're banging them into stuff and dropping them, etc... And you need 2-3 mags for some of the skills stages.

$310 vs. $88 (Accurate Mag) or $40 (MDT)

The cost difference of 3 mags pays or nearly pays for a nice chassis if that's what you want to run.

Buy a Tikka T3 varmint in your favourite flavour, have a competent smith thread it for a good brake and drop it into a MDT HS3 or Cadex chassis. You have an awesome precision rifle that fills all the tacticool desires and shoots awesome. All for $2000-2500, not bad and beats the pants off that RPR.
