First moose hunt coming up. Will be up in Quebec at one of the outfitters.

Father and father in law coming along. None of us have hunted moose before, only deer and birds.

Any tips/tricks to pass on? Any gadgets necessary for the hunt (nice to have vs need to have, calls, sprays, shooting tripods, etc)?

I'm planning on bringing my atv, mostly since father in law can't walk too far, and to help with the moose (hopefully).

I'm also brining my sawzall with foot long stainless blades for bone if needed. Extra rope.

Will make a cooler in the truck bed out of plywood and Styrofoam, and keep it topped up with ice.

Moose don't react when hit like deer do. Whatever you do, stay quiet until the animal is down, then hoot and holler and congratulate all you want. If it's still standing and you start making noise, be prepared to go into the worst bush to retrieve lol.
Wow, that's some important advice. Good to know. Hope if I ever moose hunt, I'll remember that.

Talk with your outfitter about what ranges you can expect to shoot and practice with the ammunition you will be using on the hunt. thick brush is one thing, water can also be an issue you may need to contend with.

I'll be using my 7mm prc, 175gr. Father in law is hellbent on using his Marlin 30-30 with 190gr. Guess he'll have to be pretty close.
But good tip.

moose like all other animals will die easily when hit in the heart , lungs liver kidneys spine hump
if you miss place your shot it really does not matter what calibre you use depending on terrain it could be 40 yard or 400 yards
i shot my first moose in 1983 and have shot one almost every year to date
never lost one very rarely had to track one
calibres used 308 win 280 rem 280 ack 30-06 many 300 h&h
good luck

If the outfitter guide is good he will bring the moose to you usually inside 150m so even that 30-30 should do the trick!!
Moose are usually mot hard to kill. But it can happen that he decide he’s not ready to die lol so being confident on a follow up shot is a good thing!!

Sit and call and be patient. You dont need a bunch of stuff as you wont use it. A windbreaker to put on and off. Hunters show up at camp with everything Cabelas sells and it is unnecessary. Good clothes, a rifle and ammo and a good knife. You are with an outfitter. Let them do their job

Moose aren't that hard to kill. Just put it through the boiler room and it'll go down fast enough. I've seen 270 kill just as well as 308. Arguably, the 270 was a better killer because it penetrated both sides. As long as the penetrarion was about 2 feet, it didn't matter the bullet diameter. That's more than enough for moose, and likely elk and deer as well.

Be prepared to send it 2 times. Cheers
Yep. Moose don't die hard, but taking one shot then waiting... Dumb. Pour on the extra sauce. Real conversation, from a couple or dozens of years ago...

Conversation.

"I shot a moose!"

"Where is it?"

"Well, it went that way!"

"How many rounds do you have in your mag?"

"Four!"

"Why!"

...

Keep on it until you own it!

You are using outfitters, let them do their job and heavy lifting. Do not bring tools such as saws etc. your outfitter will have that and more.

Enjoy your time with family, the nature and if your outfitter does their job, you will have a successful hunt.

I agree with those who say that moose can react differently than deer when hit in the vitals because of their relaxed nervous system . You can plug them right in the boiler room and they may just stand there . You may think you missed when it was actually a solid hit and take a few more cracks at it. Being a guided hunt you won't have too much to worry about . Just bring a rifle you are confident in at short and long ranges. Enjoy

Great tips.
It's a semi guided one. So will be on our own a lot of the time during the week.
Looking at moose calls now and reading up on it. Lots of different opinions and options
