Well I broke my bank account and booked an antelope hunt for me and my wife in Colorado. Petty pricey for what it is but it was on my bucket list! Talked to some SCI members that had hunted with this outfit and really recommended him for trophy potential. I'm pretty pumped up even though it's still months away, I love seeing new country. Time to start saving again for my next hunt, I think B.C for goats or New Mexico for elk are next on the bucket list. I'm going to shoot my new 7mm-08 loaded with 139 gr. Hornady Interlocks and load my wifes .243 with 100 gr. Interlocks. Anyone have any other bullets that they would recommend for speedgoats?

Been there done that and would love to go back to Wyoming. They are not hard to kill. You just need to take long shots sometimes. They are also very curious but good eyesight. I really enjoyed the meat. The Wife told me I can go back anytime.

The people down that area were really amazing. They man my Son and I feel really welcome.

Good luck,

If you got any questions just send me a PM.

Next time I go it will probably a DIY hunt in Wyoming. I'd like to have more hunting time on this trip but it;s only a 2 day hunt. The neat thing is though that it's all private ranch hunts and the outfitter is only taking 6 hunters during rifle season. I'll get to see lots of animals and they won't be as spooky as in the open zones.

Congratulations! I just booked my first antelope hunt as well, in Wyoming. Can't wait...I'm going through the which-rifle-to-take procedure right now.:)

Muskyhunter, you say the meat was good? I hear conflicting reports...some very good, some very, very bad. Did you just treat it like deer meat when cooking it?

Can you guys post the name of the outfitters you're dealing with. Pronhorn hunting is on my bucket list as well and I always like to see where others are going.

I'm hunting with High Plains Adventures out of Fountain,Colorado. One of my friends has hunted with him several times and says that Brandon is excellent. Only hunts a limited amount of rifle hunters and a few muzzleloaders all on private ranches that are apparently huge and exclusive.

My hunt is with an outfit called Hiland Outfitters in Wyoming. It's actually going to be a group hunt organized by members of another forum I visit, Accurate Reloading. They've done this trip for a couple of years now, and the participants seem to really enjoy it. I'll have more information in October! :)

In my experience it depends on what they are eating. I've eaten pronghorn shot is grain and pea fields and the meat was excellent. In fact, to this day it has been my wife's favourite game. I've also had the misfortune of eating a couple shot out in sage flats or nowhere near grain and frankly I didn't enjoy it at all. Nothing we did made a difference.

I sure love hunting them and with another brutal winter here in Sask I suspect it may be awhile before I get the chance again. :(

Seems like all of Central Canada and the U.S. Midwest have been pounded hard this winter. The end of March will tell how hard the antelope and deer herds have been hit. Have'nt heard about how harsh the winters have been in Colorado and Wyoming, but Kansas and Nebraska are getting lots of snow.

Mark, that sounds like it's going to be a rather excellent adventure!
Please take some pics of the local scenary and share them with us?

Is that okay with you?? :)

I sure will. I don't know who's more excited me or Michelle. Hopefully we can both take a nice animal, I've already told her she's going to have to spend lots of time on the range this summer!

Lads,

I got the meat all seamed out. No fat no bones. The wife cooks it the same way as moose or deer. She is big into stir fries. My Son and I took 4 animals and they were all good. I am sure they are just like deer. Most are great but if you shoot and old sick goat. It may not be too good. Mine were eating wild sage.

Good luck lads. You will love it.

Sounds excellent. Could you gents tell me the details involved in bringing meat back from the USA? Are you driving down? Anyone ever flown the meat back to the eastern part of the country - Ontario, Maritimes. It is a heck of a drive from here though I'd love to spend time in the west.

I thought about one but I really can't see using it anywhere else. Decided to make do with the calibres I had and reload for them.
That sounds just fine friend. Years back I missed an antelope with my 308, that should have been a slam dunk at around 150 yards. Our good friend Silverback was equally prepared as many others with his faithful Ruger 77 in 270. IIRC, his single killing shot for his speedgoat was taken at about 40 yards. Both of these scenarios happened on the flatlands of Saskatchewan btw.

I've taken 3 with a 243 and it worked flawlessly, 257 was just a suggestion as that country can get windy. If I were to go after one with a 243 again I would load the 80 gn (I think it's 80 gn) Barnes TTSX to it's max velocity (no surprises there), just a thought.
Hope you get a Booner, and your wife as well.............good luck and good shooting.

Congrats on the upcoming hunt. The last antelope i shot was easy, had my 264 win mag all prepped out to 600 yards. Animal run up to about 50 yards and stopped broadside. Good eats for sure.

Thanks c-fbmi, hope to get some good pictures if all goes well. I was going to load 100 gn Interlocks for that .243 but the TTSX's give me another option. What powder would you use?

I've received the best velocity and accuracy in all 3 of my 243s with 80 grners using IMR 4350, my son also got the best accuracy in his Mod 7 using 4350 with 80 grners. Using the TTSX in 80 grns you can really increase velocity in the 243 over the 100 grnrs and not give up penetration or bullet performance. For some reason the 80 gn bullets seem to get velocity out of proportion with other bullet weights and I have used this weight for years and 1000s upon 1000s of rounds. Have tried all the new powders as they come out but have yet to improve on IMR 4350 and always end up going back to it.
