While waiting for my RPAL to arrive I have been shopping for my first pistol. I am looking at four, a Beretta APX FDE, Glock 19 Gen 4, S&W SD9 VE, or the Girsan MC 28 Sa in desert sand. All four are chambered in 9mm Luger. Just wondering if anyone who owns any of these or has shot them has any input both good and bad. Have been to the range with a buddy and shot his Glock 17 Gen5 but that is it for my pistol experience.

I will speak to what I actually have experience with.

Glock is just ok. They are super reliable and are just as accurate as any other duty style handgun. Accessories galore comes with the glock.

You don't have the M&P9 on your list which I would recommend. They do come in a tan colour. They are fantastic guns, I have carried both and I think the M&P is the better gun. Not as many fancy custom things like glock but I like keeping thing stock any way.

I hear the MC28 is an M&P9 copy so it is probably pretty awesome too.

My vote goes to the G19 Gen 4 ..if I were to only keep one out of your list it would be the Glock for a variety of reasons. ..I wouldn't count out a Glock 17 tho either.

I have the APX and an SD9VE (you know the VE stands for Value Enhanced)
The APX is a good choice for the budget.
The SD9 has a gritty factory trigger with a heavy trigger pull. Not a really nice pistol to shoot a lot.

From what I have read the MC28 is essentially a clone of the M&P9 but at half the price tag so that is why I didn’t include it, that being said you get what you pay for and makes me hesitant on the MC28. All the add ons of the Glock aren’t my thing just like the simplicity and reliability of them. I appreciate all the input as I am totally new to handguns...

I am leaning towards the Beretta APX though.

I have a few Glocks...17, 19, 21, 22, 34. I have them because they are rugged, the mags are easy to source, and they are pretty much fool proof. I've never had a significant malfunction that wasn't ultimately my fault, usually with bad reloads. I've fired thousands of rounds from my Glocks. I love the 17 or 19 Gen4 the most. They aren't pretty guns, but they are dependable...and getting more inexpensive.

I would nix the SD9. It's a cheaper gun and you can pay only a little more to get the M&P9...a far nicer gun. Consider a range kit and get most everything you need starting out.

Any ways to get iron sights on a Glock? I mean I respect the material, but is there anything to be gained from swapping polymer sights? Are LEO using the regular polymer sights? I'm not looking at sight picture or glow-in-the-dark, but the long term durability? I know that in Canada, for pistol range training, its not critical, but just asking?

If you can shoot your friends glock regularly I'd say get another pistol. Try several in the store if possible.
Depends on your budget. I highly recommend CZ pistols....all of them. A glock 17 can be had used on EE for 500-600 for a gen4. Depends all on the size of your hands and comfort with the pistol.

If I were to buy another gun without even looking at anything else I'd buy a Shadow 2.... they shoot awesome but are pricey.. One affordably police turn ins or the Shadow 1 are great learning pistols and they are durable and well made. So far in my gun exp I have found cheaper guns generally get replace quickly once you get to handle nicer guns. I began shooting handguns 2 yrs ago and without sounding snobby I found the cheaper polymer pistols to be snappy and less comfortable to shoot. I only bought a Glock 17 for the magazines to use on a FX9 still it's very accurate right out of the box. I could shoot a CZ Shadow or Berretta 92 all day, the Glock on the other hand after several msgs begins to wear on my wrist making longer shooting time less pleasant. Still if I was in the USA I'd probably use the Glock as a carry pistol of those 3.

there's so many options though you should have fun with em all. Cost out what magazines and accessories costs too before you buy as well as how available said items are. Just like buying a cheap printer sometimes magazine availability is a real pain in the but in Canada.

Have you handled all four of them? The only gun to buy is the one that fits your hand. I could tell you that black Oxford dress shoes are THE BEST, but if the ones you try on don't fit, we've both wasted our time.

Of the bunch, I'm partial to the Glock. As has been posted, there are just so many accessories out there that you won't be disappointed. If you have budgeted for more money than the sticker price, buy more ammo. There is no substitute for trigger time and muscle memory.

I got a glock 17 w front surrations. The sights are alloy.

Its my first pistol. The mags and ammo match my jrc which had a lot to do with picking it. Its more accurate than I am, thats for sure.

Get the Walther PPQ M2 Navy instead. Buy the others later if you want to have a bit of a collection.

Part of the reason three of the four were chosen was the fit in my hand and the APX, MC28, G19 all come with three different back straps to customize the fit. My friends G17 had the largest blackstrap installed and I found it a bit awkward as I have smaller hands.

All the advice is great, gives me a lot more to think about and base my decision on.

I put the backstrap on my Glock 17 and though it was more comfortable to hold. It shot best with me with the standard grip. So went back to that. It's just a zapper anyway.
