Well today was my first time shooting a bolt action rifle, sighting in a scope, shooting at 100 meters and first trip out with my Remington 700 5r. I am extremely happy with my rifle purchase, not so much with the scope. It worked flawlessly, I just realized the limitations it has for what I want to do (no turrets and 1" tube limiting ring selection). The rifle as a whole could not be happier, did everything I had wanted! I couldn't believe how little recoil was felt in the cadex chassis, I was able to put down 80 rounds without any fatigue or soreness, I mean my 9mm keltec sub2k hurts more than this!

Rifle Specs:
Remington 700 5r action with 24" barrel 1 in 11 1/4" twist
Timney 510 Trigger
Cadex Field Strike Chassis w/ magpul K2+ grip
Zeiss Conquest HD5 5-25x50mm with burris zee qd rings (looking for replacement rings!)
Harris S-BRM bipod

I had taken all of my shots with a JSA tactical small or medium bag under the buttstock (prefered medium). I really liked the ability to squeeze the bag to help aim, as well as keeping a stable position that was easy to repeat. The harris bipod wasn't bad, just need to get a locking handle to cut out some swivel. I had used Federal Gold Medal Match in 168 gr.

My best grouping was 0.578" at 100 meters with Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr bthp

Second best grouping at 0.774"

Third best grouping at 0.792"

I have 200 sierra matchking 175 gr bthp bullets coming with 100 lapua cases by friday, so hopefully next range trip will be in 2 weeks with reloaded ammo.

Congratulations. If you want to have some real fun come on out to the Island match. It's loads of fun. Don't be afraid of having a bad shoot we were all new at one point. Last time I did the service rifle on sat and the precision rifle on sun. With my Remington with a blind mag. For some shoots I loaded the mag shot what I could. Other matches I single loaded.

Sweet, will order one when in stock! I bet my wallet happy it's not in stock, after the last 2 weeks!

I don't know about the service rifle part, but the precision rifle seems like a damn good time!

Nice rifle. I belong to Abbotsford Fish and Game and love shooting my .308 at 100. If you really want accuracy, try reloading. Im a relative novice and started reloading a year ago and get incredible (for me) 5 shot groups. If it's not 1/2 - 3/4 moa I'm not trying. Nice to be able to find the sweet spot that your rifle likes and a single stage press and the bit of equipment won't break the bank. It will pay for itself if you are buying gold medal rounds, as you can replicate or better the factory loads for 1/2 the price.

Last line of my first post.

So, I have a Lee challenger 50th anniversay press (ordered regular one w/ hand held primer, cabelas sent 50th anni) and a rcbs powder trickler. Then 80 federal match casings deprimed, and primer pocket cleaned waiting for my projectiles and dies to arrive. Also have 35 various shells from my RFB that are green on the inside, so I have ordered a frankfurt aresenal rotary tumbler. Already have 1lb of varget and 1000 federal match large primer's

Nice start. As others have said need to start handloading to get better precision and lower cost.
Go to 5 shot grouping, 3 is more like a gathering.

An update!

This was my second group of the session, 5 rounds of federal gold metal match 168 gr at 0.340" (I zero'd calipers at 0.308")100 meters. I'm quite happy with my results, it seems I'm getting smaller groups on every trip out. I've taken my rifle out 3 times now, combined total round count of 390 down range (80 rnds, 180 rnds, 130 rnds)

What a beauty. I have the same rifle. I saved money for 2 years and at last bought it (by the way my wife was not happy when she found out). And all I need now is to order a perfect scope. I have found few good ones. And decided to choose atn scope . The hunting season is already started I need to find some good place for a hunt and bring a big catch. It should satisfy my wife:d

View attachment 35284View attachment 35285Nice shooting, I had mine out yesterday,60 rnds of factory and 80 test loads. The Barnes ttsx 168 g were awesome and grouping 5 rnd groups under an inch. The nosler ballistic tip 165 g and varget were under an inch also. Going to try some smk next but really like the Nosler. Was using a bushnell banner 3-9 scope ..lol while I wait on my NF. Here's how she sits now, I'm planning on a CFB barrel and NF next trip. Then things are getting serious:)

Nice shooting there Bsand.

How long were you at the range (or wherever it is you shoot) for you to put 180 rounds down range in one session??!
That time was 3 hours I've slowed down since to let barrel to cool. But I cant wait to burn the factory 5r to go with a kreiger5r

That's a lot of bullets in a short time window IMO!

Re barrel: since your current barrel (and action) are giving your some solid result, why are you in such a rush to burn through it?? The Rem 5r have a solid reputation out of the box so you may as well just sale the barrel, recoup some $$ and get the Kreiger you want - but I honestly don't see a point nor benefit of burning it as quickly as possible.

Well it's not a rush to burn through. But I've done the math 10k rounds is about max life. I'll be spending atleast one day a week at the range so 4-5 hours, next time I'm going to bring my pistols as well so while waiting for it to cool down I have something else to do Or just my 22 plinkster that way i dont have to attempt 100 meter shots with a 9mm p226.. So thats 200 rounds a week so 50 weeks..

Hm this actually makes a lot of sense, as to why I'm so broke all of a sudden... I keep buying reloading components! I have 4 poumds of varget(had 5), 1lb 3031 and 1lb 4064 at home and another 4 coming on wednesday, 1200 175 smk, 2000 gm210m primers, 200 lapua brass 150 fc gmm brass in the last 3 weeks. And then more upgrades and accessories, especially with the s&b I want (waiting on prices), i also dropped off my bolt for blackrose tactical to thread and install a bolt knob another 100 there, then the 200 i wasted on mdt stuff that didn't work. Oh I'm also eyeing a Swarovski spotting scope..

I would bet that once you load up 44.4 +/- 0.3 gr varget or 41.8 +/- 0.3 gr 4064 with the 175 smk and Lap brass/210 match primer, your groups will shrink.
My 5R shot Fed GMM factory the same as yours, when I hand loaded above loads, the groups shrunk a lot!
I also played with COAL, on buddy's and my 5R, and found the best COAL was 2.80-2.81".
Nice rig BTW!

Wow those are the exact loads i have written up in my reloading note book to try! I had the varget ones loaded up but i tried the 3031 first (dismal results), then 4064 had good luck with 41.7 but 41.8 was horrible comparatively (0.56" vs 1.05"). Then after 130 rounds and I had to drop my bolt off which i was already 2 hrs late for as it took an hour and half for me to get a bench then wait for the cease fire as it was hunter sightin weekend (last one too).
