When I bought my hex mosin nagant, the finish bothered me seeing it scratched and slightly chipped in places. I got the sand paper and wood stain finish from the local Home Hardware. I used Natural Cherry from the company Miniwax and it's a stain/protective coating. I'm happy with the way it turned out.

looks good brah....i did the stock on mine with like minwax golden oak, turned out real nice too but now its in an archangel stock...and the nice wood sits safe in the closet ....but its a cool experience putting your own touch on something as old as your grandparents :)

Looks great, I had to re do mine also, I'm on the bum, can you measure the escutcheons, the metal around the sling holes, I'm looking for the height and length

Very nice! Better than the one I did. If you mask off the sling escutcheons with tape before the refinish and then scrape off the hardened cosmo from them you get a nice shiny steel look.

Looks good! Just started on mine yesterday, stripped the flaking shellac off with acetone and a toothbrush and wipe the slurry away with cotton free rags, got it done in under an hour.

Now, it's not for everybody, but I left some of the old oil/stains in the wood before I began coating with BLO. For the only reason that I didn't want it looking new, I still wanted that "used" look about it (leaving some dirt in the cartouches really makes them stand out). I'll post pics in a few days when the action is back in the stock, but she's looking good so far :)

I'm quite a fan of oil and wax finishes, how did yours turn out using the Mahogany stain? The Minwax was just a stain, right, not a stain and sealant?

i was pleased with how it came out, the minwax stain was not a sealant, just a stain.

if i had my time back i think i would of went a little darker though. ive been the the range a couple times with it since, and its gotten some attention

I initially started to modernize, refinish those.. but lately... just clean it and leave the way they are.. for memory/ collection purposes and I guess future invsetment
