Hi guys

So here it is my first reloads. I started with my Good old Marlin 30-30win 1955.

I had hard time finding data for 170gr Hornady FP interlock bullet and IMR 3031

I was inspired with a load in my Hodgdon magasine that was made for Sierra FP 170Gr. with a COL 2.550" Imr 3031 27.5 - 29.2grs.

I used 28.5grs of powder and did not crimp my bullets that was set at COL 2.550

Lower left groups is Factory winchester 170gr power-point.
All the other are from me 28.5Grs 170gr hornady

My loads seems to hit between 1 and 2 inch to low. if I compare them to winchester factory load.

Here my question. Do you think it's Bullet difference between Hornady and wichester or I am gettin a bullet drop due to a lack of velocity (powder)

Target was at 50M

Also where can we see the hornady loads ? I also got bullets for my 270WSM
I just havent choose the powder yet. I need more powder application with hornady bullets.

Another thing Can you substitute Safely, bran of bullet with the load in the books ? Exemple book say 130gr barnes tsx bullet with IMR 4350 , can I use a Hornady or a speer instead bullet with the same powder and # of grs ?
if yes how would I seat the bullet like a Barnes TSX or visually so the crimp mark seems at the right place and the bullet is no longer then the max COL ?

Thanks again Im learning do much things these last days and Love it :)

You can substitute data, for similar bullet types. Same weight and material. 180gr lead would use one set of data. 180 gr Jacketted would use another. 180gr barnes copper, would use yet another set of data. So, you could interchange Speer and Hornady data, but NOT Barnes, as Barnes is not the same type of bullet. Speer, Hornady, Sierra, all mostly sell jacketted bullet. Barnes is a monolithic copper bullet, which has it's own set of data. There are similarities in the data, at times, but do not load without having the proper data.

The difference is due to your reloads not being factory identical. If you like how they group and you're done tinkering, simply re-zero the rifle to these.

I substitute bullet data from the books all the time. Just do like curtmg said, use jacketed data for jacketed bullets, lead for lead, etc. Now, having said that, you will find that you won't get the same results with every type of XX gr bullet. Round nose will group different than a spitzer. And don't start at the max if you change bullets.
