First Rifle/Rimfire

Well I decided I wanted to learn to shoot a rifle and have read that .22 is the way to go. So already having a Ruger MK 1 that I shoot all the time I know how much fun a .22 can be to shoot.

I have decided on the Savage MK II FV. I just need to find a local dealer or I will probably end up ordering from Ellwood Epps.

I was looking at adding a scope and being as it my first rifle I am kinda lost. I dont really want to spend much more then $100 on the scope. I looked at the following:

1)Bushnell rimfire 3-9x32 (frontier)
2)Throphy 3-9x40 (P&D)
3)Banner 4-14x40 AO (P&D)
4)Tasco Varmint 6-24x42 AO (Frontier)

I will mosty be shooting 25, 50, 100 doing my best to punch paper. I am really trying to use this rifle a first step to longer distance target shooting. I just wanted to see if I like it. I dont want to spend too much on a scope if it just becomed a plinking thing.

Thanks for any help on scope ideas and rings. Cant wait to get to shooting.

I would say that for a .22 at under 100 yards , a 3-9x40 would be plenty of scope.

How do you figure that? I have a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 on my CIL/Anschutz and it is definitely not pushing it in any way. For longer range precision shooting, I will take all the magnification I can get.

OP, I would vote for the 4-16x40 AO Banner or the 6-24 Tasco, but I have seen varied reports on the quality of the Tasco. The adjustable objective is important for rimfire use to avoid parallax problems while shooting close in.

Buy the best glass you can afford, you will never regret the money spent.

Since it's your first rifle, I wouldn't be too concerned about a scope just yet. Learn to use the iron sights first, then go with a scope.

In practical terms, you're not going to be shooting more than 100 yds, so you really don't need a big rifle scope, such as your options 2, 3, and 4. It were me, I'd go with the Bushnell Rimfire scope and I think you'll be happy with it.

I am currently trying to price the banner scope locally.

This is my first rifle but as a child I used to shoot with my father a lot. Its has been 15 years or so at least so I am pretty much looking at it like I havent done it before. Not sure how much is going to come back to me when I start shooting. I will be sure to shoot with and without a scope.

I noticed after 100 meter's on a 22LR round, the wind & bullet drop are so great that any shot is a gamble for a hit on a semi but maybe since it's a bolt I could see 4-16x40 being a good fit. As for a 6-24 scope I wouldn't recommend it due to the fact it's a 22LR and the optic's on max zoom on this scope are not that great. Also the field of view at 100 meter's at 9x magnification is 28 feet. Witch for fast moving varemit's it works perfectly for catching them on the run. Also the price vs. the quailty of optic's is outstanding @ $38.99 USD it was a no brainer.

My first 22 had a Weaver 4x on it in the 60s. My current rifle is a CZ452 and it has a Nikon Prostaff 4x on it. I use a couple of 9x variables but they are on my 30cals. I have a 6-16 on my 223 cuz it will go way out there. Anything above 4x on a rimfire is overtech IMHO. Spend the money on a single fixed power scope with decent glass and you will get good use and excellent ops. Even a $50 fixed will give better ops than a $50 variable. Not to mention being way more reliable.
 
:agree: bogie I usually ether have it on 3x or 9x never in between. As I like using the mil-dots for different ranges and for guessing the range.

I was in a similar situation as the OP. After much reading, shooting, and questioning, I was down to the CZ 452 and Savage MK 2 for a new rifle. I was also keeping an eye out for a nice used BRNO or Anschutz.

Many people on Rimfire Central (another great forum for guns) commented that they did not like their FV because of the flimsy stock. They were now looking for aftermarket stocks. :(

Spend a little more and get the BV stock if you want the same action and barrel, but a sturdier mount. I found a BV (new on the EE here), and I am very happy with it so far. These are amazingly accurate guns off the shelf. You will not be disappointed.:D

As for the scope......I put a Trophy 3-9 x 40 on it, and it works well. You will have a bit of a time without the adjustable objective, but it is nice and clear. You are mentioning 100 yard shots, so I would go with a Banner 4-12 x 40 AO, or a Mueller. Haven't tried the Mueller myself, but the feedback is very good. I may even order one for myself to try.
