I just picked up a tikka t3x hunter in 308.
I'm trying to decide what glass to get it. i want to set the gun up hunting opposed to target. the farthest my range goes is 300 yards and the hunting distance will probably be less then that. im a bit confused on how much i should be spending. i obviously want it to hold zero and dont want the glass fogging. the place where i got the gun showed me a few scopes i liked the Burris droptine over the vortex crossfire but there current selection sort of went up to the 1000.00 scopes with no middle priced ones. i didn't know leupold stopped making the vx2. i haven't herd a lot about the vx freedom. i did read good things about the droptine and fullfield scopes. i would appreciate opinions on this.
i am reading about scopes to get a better understanding.
thanks.

I didn't realize Leupold stopped making the VX2 either! But their 3-9x40 is best bang for your buck IMO. And more than ample for 300 yard shots. If you want to go into the $1000 range look into the VX3 or even VX5 with the CDS dials. With some practise you'll find you can get quite comfortable out to 500 yards in good conditions. I am currently waiting for a VX5 HD 2-10 with CDS and illuminated firedot. Just need to decide which weapon to put it on....

I have run Bushnell Elites for years on many different hunting guns. Plenty rugged and reasonably priced. Leupold VXII & VXIII's can be had used also. I wouldnt hesitate to buy ANY of these scopes used. They rarely give up the ghost, and last decades. I often see 3-9x40 elites from $175-250 and Leupold VX2's for $250-325 used. They are just as good used as new. And for 300 yds or less, you wont need more. Comb the E.E. for your optical goodness at a price that is reasonable. People often sell perfectly good scopes such as the Elites/Leupolds just to get the latest, greatest wonderscope. Their loss-your gain!!

Get a STAC 3x16 moa reticle about 659$ range and you will be a very happy camper:)

These scopes are a great deal:

Or if you can find one, a used Zeiss Conquest is great. Or a Sightron SII Big Sky (harder to find).

Tough to beat that deal on the Bushnell Elite though!

The Leopold freedom are apparently equivalent to the vx2 glass. I had a cheap bushnell on my 7rm and hated it. Put leupold vx1 3-9x40 and worth every penny. You invested in a decent rifle don't cheap out on the glass or you will regret it. Check EE on here for some good deals. Or shop online amazon, ebay, Cabelas all can have deals too.
Taken several deer and bear, all under 100y. It shoot targets at the range at 300-500 easily.

Nikon and Vortex have improved a lot over the last several years. The clarity on the Nikon scopes is phenomenal and the quality of the components on the vortex is quite good.

Might want to take a look at them as well. Save a little bit of money also.

I'm not overly surprised it comes back around to leupold. people do like the bushnell elite as well. i am keeping an eye open for vx2s and trying to talk myself into the vx3i price tag.
probably a question i should have started with is what magnification is ideal within 300 yards? thanks again.

Leupold VX-Freedom Duplex reticule 279.99 @ Prophet River. VX-2 glass and coatings at significant cost saving, if that is your thing... I received one about a month ago - sitting on my son's deck neither of us could see anything that the other couldn't see, out to 1/4 mile, limited by bush line - we were comparing a Burris Signature 2.5-10 with that VX-Freedom 3-9.

3-9 is plenty for a 300 yd shot if hunting.
