This christmas im getting myself a new bolt action, my first to be exact:)

The rifle im looking at is the Savage 111fcns (synthetic stock, clip, no sights)

heres the link: http://www.savagearms.com/111fcns.htm

anyways, im wondering because its a hunting gun if its a big deal to use it in matches and such? The reason i like it because you can use clips which to me is the big selling factor, otherwise i would get the law enforcment version with a thicker barrel. is there a big difference? would the hunter be effective in precision matches? And i plan it to be 30-06! its also going to be used for hunting just so you all know:)

Also im looking for a scope about around 500$ any ideas?

There is a big difference between a sporter barrel and a heavy barrel. A sporter barrel is nice and light but will have great difficulty in maintaining tight groups when firing longer strings - if you are only hunting this is great. If you want to shoot longer strings (say more then 3-5 rds at a time) the sporter barrel will heat up quicker and the shots may start to wander. I guess what you should get will depend on how much you plan on shooting your rifle. If you want to shoot a lot of matches - you should look to get a medium to heavy weight barrel, if you want to hunt more you should probably get a sporter weight as it will probably be easier to hunt with. For 500 bucks you can get a number of good scopes either Leupold's VX II series or a Bushnell Elite 4200 series you haven't stated what magnification you want though so recommendations are hard. You might also want to say what you plan on doing with this rifle - you don't need a lot of magnification for hunting big game but you might want more for Varmints...

yeah, i might go for the 10LE fp then, 2 lbs isnt much, im a young guy

i dont know what magnification i need or should get

the bulk of shooting will be targets and such, so id like the thicker barrel, thanks!

The LE version also gets a longer, heavier barrel and you probably won't find it in .30-'06.

As for it's suitability for match shooting, you'd first have to decide on what sort of match, then you'd have to shoot it with good ammo and see for yourself.
.30-'06 is not generally thought of as an "accuracy caliber" anymore. On the other paw, some Savages are very accurate right out of the box.
In short, it's tough to know without shooting the rifle.
The nice thing about the Savage is that when you decide you want a new barrel and other mods there is a wealth of experience.

I've seen many 10FP's that come available w/ McMillan, H-S Precision & Choate stocks at P&D Enterprises...Just can't go wrong with those even though I'm a Remy man now but my first one was a 10FP in .308...

Actually the clip, especially in a standard length like the '06 is a brilliant idea. A 3 or 4 shot clip can be stretched/spliced to make a 10 shot which is great for some sorts of matches, especially when it will let you use cartridges like 6.5 Mystic, 6.5-.284 and 6.5 swede.

I would lean toward the LE version in 308 if hunting and competition are in the plans. Just my 2 cents.
As for the detachable box mag... not sure the others don't have it too? I would enquire here or at Savage before letting it sway you one way or the other.
Merry X-mas :)

Although I own a couple 3x-9x scopes, the power range seems less useful than a 4x-16x would be on a larger rifle (something not meant for snap shooting). and for something meant for close quarters in the bush, a 1x-4x, a 1.5x-4.5x or a 1.5x-6x is super fast at 1x or 1.5x, almost as quick as a red-dot and turned-up to 4x, 4.5x or 6x, longer shots are certainly possible.

Agreed. I have a remington 700 with a leupy 4.5-14 50mm with a deuplex. I am gona get a fine duplex in it, but if I ranged with it a TMR would do the trick and its nice and slim. Then you dont psych yourself out with an overly powerful scope and never take a shot haha.

I'm considering a Savage 12BVSS in .223, transfer my Leupold 6.5-20x50 LRT on it & get a 4.5-14x50 for the Rem .308 LTR...I just can't cheap out on optics anymore :)
