My only advice is to stay away from the Winchester ammo. The rim is ever so slightly smaller than the other brands and you will have extraction issues. I have a Mark II FVT and I have no issues with Blaser or Remington and I curse the Winchester stuff.

That's strange because for just plinking I prefer Winchester over Remington. I find some of the Remington rounds hard to chamber like the cases are not sized properly.

That goes for both semis and bolts.

So I've wanted an economical alternative to the savage 10FCP to punch paper with for some time now. 308 gets damned expensive after a while.

So i narrowed down my options to a CZ455 thumbhole and a Savage MkII TR. Both would run north of 600 bones and promised to be good shooters. Strolling through my local gun shop today i noticed both a MkII TR and a MkII TTR SR. After handling them i really liked the way the TR handled.

Now this store usually has inflated prices, but out of curiosity i asked what the damage was on both. The threaded model with the fugly tri rail was 649.99. More than i was looking to spend. The TR was listed at 499.99. After a quick spin around the Web, i couldnt find a better deal.

So now I own a MkII TR. I have a vortex crossfire II that i can throw on tonight. Hoping to get the girl out soon!

Anyone have any advice on things i may want to do? I hear the bottom metal is sketchy. Any accurising tips?

I was surprised how far aft i had to mount the optic to get a good sight picture. looks odd...may need some adjustment at the range.

I had a TR in .22lr and it was a nice rifle.

Mine liked the CCI Standard and CCI Green Tag alot.
Other than adjust the Accutrigger to the lowest setting, I don't see anything you can improve on this rifle other than a bedding job but is it really a must, probably not.

My father bought a MKII FVT probably 8 years ago (give or take). It shoots really well; I was quite surprised for the $400 with target sights that he paid new. He mounted a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 on it for a local match in NB, but there were RNBRA members from all over the province coming in to shoot it. He ended up in second place next to a guy with maybe $4000 in his rifle (Anschutz with Leupold target scope).

Dollar for dollar, I find most Savages to be quite accurate. There are many out there that are more accurate, and better finished, but it is the cost difference that has been the issue IMO. Myself, I think I would buy a CZ or Anschutz, but that is because I am looking for something to hand down to my kids. That being Said I am buying A Savage this summer to teach my oldest daughter with.

I love everything about Savage rifles, both centre and rimfire. BUT I have read and experienced that they are prone to FTE if not cleaned. I was shooting the cheap Winchester 333 ammo and it really gums up the chamber. Quite a few rimfire websites suggest a good cleaning to the bolt and chamber or putting another spring under the extractor.
