first rimfire rifle

Well, my first rifle (and still only) was a Savage MkII FSS and I don't regret it, it has had it's issues with ammo and perhaps the scope, but overall awesome for a first rifle to learn and start on. .22lr to start for sure because it's cheap to shoot and I know I wanted to shoot a LOT at first, and still do...

Once was in the same situation as you were. I bought a Savage bolt action 22 because they where cheaper than the CZ 452 American. The Savage is a great rifle, but now that I'm shooting in competions, the CZ is something I wish I had bought the first time(for me they feel more balanced when shooting off hand)

I heard someone say this a while ago and its true: Buy a good 22 because you will shoot it the most

I have narrowed down my choice to 2 rifle i found, first a ruger 10-22 sporter deluxe and a savage model 64. I have heard Good things from both and can't decide and the price is a 20$ difference, both under 200$. I thinks i need to take a Good look a them to decide...

I'd go ruger 10/22 over savage 64. Better mag, better firing pin setup, much more aftermarket stuff including high cap mags, bull barrels, trigger kits etc etc.

I'm the last guy to recommend a 10/22, but out of those 2 choices, that's what I'd go with. In spite of endless threads about 10/22 modifications on CGN, a stock 10/22 will actually shoot all on it's own.

As a first .22lr, I think semis are not a good idea. Bolts are more accurate 99% of the time (R-55 guys~calm down :) ) and teach you to make every shot count. They're also 100x easier/faster to clean, fewer parts, etc. etc. Take a look through the rimfire forum at threads about failure to fire (FTF) failure to eject (FTE)...magazine issues, slipping scopes, inaccurate barrels, you name it, then see how many of those threads are discussing bolt action rifles.

On a positive note, 10/22s (and 64s) are both so popular that you'll have a massive body of repair experience on this forum and others, so if your lights are on, you should have no trouble finding the help you need in the event you need it.

well, it depends how much you want to shoot and how much money you got.

I have a 22 lr semi auto for general semiauto hardcore plinking
and a 17 HMR for varminging/hunting/precision shooting.

While it's a tad over $200 a brand new Marlin 60 Deluxe is $217 if you are considering a semi-auto. Accurate and reliable right out of the box with 14 shots in the tube.

What would be a fair price for a savage model 64 with Wood stock, the guys is asking 170$

Does that include shipping? What kind of condition is it in, how long has it been used (round count?). How many mags does it include?

Considering a 64G is $198 MSRP and I just sold a similar gun with a 3-9x32 scope and 4 mags for $225 shipped, (shipping is $25-$35), I would say that $130-$150 plus shipping might be fair depending on condition.

While a Savage 64 is a decent gun I would actually lean toward a Marlin model 60 or if you want box mag style, a Marlin 795. You might also consider a Mossberg 702 Plinkster

I have a mossberg 702 plinkster, it's ok... only issue is that I had to file the entrance of the chamber because it was so sharp it would chip every bullet entering and jam with lead and copper chips....

I'd also lean toward the 60 or 795. You can pick up a 795 for a song, they are like $125 brand new and likely the most accurate sub $500 semi out there. Next to the marlin 60 that is... I don't know why because it defies logic with the mag tube hanging off of it, but in my experience it is a hair more accurate than the 795.
They are just a better design with the barrels properly screwed into the action, the savage is a slip fit with a retaining pin...

I went to 3 gun shop near my place and I am stunned. 1 did not have any .22 in stock and dont plan on ordering some for stock but he can do a special order. The 2nd had 2 in stock, both with pink stock and so small it looked like my old bb rifle and the 3GS store had 3 in stock, all over 600$. I think I will have to find a used one or wait a month or 2

To defenitly close this thread, i bought a Marlin xt22r a nice bolt action .22 lr rifle with syntec stock.

Congrats on that great bolt you just got. Don't close the thread yet. At least let the CGN community know how you like it. Knowing Marlin you picked a gun which will not frustrate the first time its shot. Enjoy those first groupings and share your range report/impressions. Happy shooting!!!
