Hello Guys, looking at getting a .22 semi auto as a starter and eventually moving up to higher calibers. Done some of my own research and was narrowing it down to a few different guns. I think my go to will be the Derya TM22 as its pretty well priced around $579 where i am locally and comes in a few different colors. (really like the Green). But i have considered possibly a CZ 512 Tactical, which is almost double the cash at about a grand here. Have seen some mentions of ruger 10/22s or the Gsg 16. But realistically I am just looking for something to use for practicing and plinking. Heard alot of good things from the Ruger 10/22 and the Gsg 16 for customizing but im not into that at the moment. Nor not into buying one of those for the same price as the TM22 and then spending more to customize it. Kind of like the Tm22 with the aluminum frame and using AR Style stocks and pistol grip. Any big pros or cons toward the TM22 or changing my mind toward the other guns?

Congrats on getting into the shooting sports, 22LR is absolutely the best place to start! I think the best advice is to get what you want, because you're paying for it and have to like it. Like everything in life, each type of gun (make/model//action) has it's pros/cons.

I think @ the root of it, the decision on what to buy hinges on what your expectations are. I see no issue with starting with a semi, but also recognizing that compared to a bolt action, you're making some choices. Lesser trigger, more involved gun to disassemble/clean, more moving parts, less accuracy as a rule, tools required to do even basic maintenance, etc. Not problems, but choices you need to be aware of. In terms of what semi, those are popular and well-liked. Makes like Ruger/Marlin might offer better parts support down the road considering they're domestically made and have been around a long time, but that's a comment about them..and not one about Derya. I don't know what parts availability even looks like right now for the Turkish guns. Could be amazing?

Guess I'm actually suggesting a bolt action like I normally do. lol

I have 10/22s, GSG16s, and a tm22. The Derya gets used a lot more than the others.

Will it stand up over time? Not sure but for the price I'm happy with it.

Played around with different ammo to test for accuracy, its not terrible.

Although you may still find some stock at vendors, I think CZ512 is now discountinued?...in case that maters to you.
There is CDN Derya FB page that may be worth checking out. I think it's creator is here on CGN also.

Following the "Used" line of thought, if you're in a club/range perhaps a member would have a rifle you could actually "try b4 buy", on top of saving some Bucks. Personally I'd go with a Bolt action like a Savage B22 or Ruger American or a used CZ. I went with a B22, then a CZ-455 then a CZ 457-VMTR.
Generally, the Bolt Action rifles will give you better accuracy for the money.

The 10/22 is like lego for grownups, with all manner of variants and parts available from several vendors. Very reliable if you have decent parts properly assembled.

Ok thanks, lots of great info. I was considering the cz 512 tactical, but just the price is a little high at the moment for me. I have kind of looked around second hand,(obviously not in the EE section yet). And i havent seen any TM22 for sale second hand, and only seen one Cz 512 for sale, but it was the same price as buying a brand new one. I am interesting in getting a bolt action down the road, but for now was hoping to get a semi first just to plink around with for a little bit.

Buy a Browning SA22. New or used. I have a FN of my Dad's bought in the 30's and the only problem I have had is I lost the magazine one winter hunting Jacks and found it in the spring before the fields were disced. Your grandkids will love it.

A "starter" without a price range but the CZ512 was too high is a start.
There are some posts in regards to accuracy but practice and plinking suggests to me you have no expectations as to accuracy.
The cheapest Ruger 10/22 and the cheapest ammo will suffice for pop can accuracy.
From there you are on the road to discovery with no great loss when it fails to meet your expectations.
There is lots on the EE and the internet unless you are in a rush. The Xmas bills are coming in and there are good deals to be had.
You are within easy access to Ridgedale and Mission where there are Rimfire events. See what else is being used.

One More time - Savage 64s are very accurate and one of the lowest priced semis available now. Ca $200 + tax and my 2 are as accurate as a 10/22. And they run fine with Fed Auto-match.

Buck is right....Savage 64/Cooey 64 are great...and not just for beginners. Good pricing and easy takedown for cleaning. It was one of my first semi as well. I still have it ( along with several other 22lr). It will not dissapoint. Most 22lr rifles are good, they all have their unique characteristics. In all likelyhood you will end up owning a several types of them as time goes by.

Savage 64. Why? Cost, as some mentioned; got one last year for $199.00 at my local Canadian Tire (regular price). Reliability is on par with the 1022. You can get 20 round mags for the 64. Rifle is all steel, no aloy receiver. Slim, compact design. Upgrades needed; maybe a longer charging handle (I use the stock one). Disassembly and assembly for cleaning are similar to the 1022. I put an after market folding stock on my 64 and it is plenty cool and really shoots. That stock was $99.00; still less than a bottom of the barrel 1022, with accuracy similar or maybe even better.356662022_296691849485034_8824970176107230868_n.jpg356729752_1328672731366624_792316219276307511_n.jpg

I stand by the 10/22, just get yourself a Volquarsten hammer kit and you will be good if you find the trigger too heavy. I like them since Ruger stands behind their products and parts are so easy to find. I had a receiver crack and sent it off and had a new one within 3 weeks.
Sylvestre sporting goods has VQ in Canada. I like all the customizable features myself. I find they are very reliable. Also If you don’t mind a tube mag the Remington 552 BDL is nice too. Know some people whi have Derya’s they seem happy.
Here is a link to some 10/22 kits I played around with.

I guess I should add I had a marlin 795 as well. Very accurate and reliable as well as light weight. I sold it a few years after getting into 10/22s. Ended up preferring the 10/22 which surprised me.

My favorite semi auto 22lr is the Marlin 795. Last round hold open, 25rd mags are available, not too heavy, good accuracy and reliability. Only issue with them is the trigger guards crack if you tighten the action screws too much, but aftermarket replacements are available if that happens to you. I've broken one of the two I have, an after market trigger guard is on my to-do list, as well as a left hand safety, but the broken one is still holding so I haven't been too motivated to deal with it yet. Actually, I guess I have a 2nd issue with them, they don't make 'em anymore and used prices are climbing on them. I am seeing them on the EE for twice what I paid for either of mine.

I am also a big fan of my Winchester Wildcat. Its really light - 4lb on the dot according to Winchester - has a last round hold open, and is more left-hand friendly than most others due to a reversible safety and ambi mag release. Takedown is super quick, no tools required, and allows you to clean from the chamber end of the barrel with a cleaning rod, a lot of semi auto 22s (including my marlins) you either have to use a flexible rod, a bore snake, or clean from the muzzle end. My only complaint was the front sight is too big for precision work, but it comes with a pic rail built in so I topped mine with a little 4x fixed power scope.

If you want a gun that you can sink $1000++ into upgrades and accessories, the 10/22 wins hands down. Other than the AR15 they are probably the best supported gun in the world from an aftermarket perspective. Personally I don't think they're worth the cost for what you get in their stock form though, but I don't really like semi auto 22s that don't have a last round bolt hold open.

Yep...Marlin 795 is great. Got one those also. 10/22 is great too......got two.....you don"t HAVE to modify them. Lots of good options for OP.

There is a very nice “used new in box” Volquartzen at Corlanes in Dawson Creek for $2200. If you called I bet they would send you pictures and maybe a video.

I took a serious look at the Ruger Precision 22LR bolt gun. Higher priced than the 10/22 but the RP has credentials way above most 22LR’s in that price range.
A bit more than the RP is the CZ457 line……..all still under C$800.00

Check out on line comparisons; the CZ generally will out shoot the Ruger, Tika and about anything else short of rifles costing a whole lot more.
