I guess it will need another cleaning, as it started sweating out cosmoline. Upper/lower handguards got sticky and so did the bolt. We made sure the feed path was ok. Still shot pretty good. The video looked a little better before it was edited by the software and uploaded to YouTube. I will try my JVC camcorder next time. Used a Canon still camera that records 720p video.

If anyone could please embed this video, I'd appreciate it. Forgot how to do it...

What distance was that at and how did you shoot? Also what year is yours?

Posted a pic of it, as I know very little about them. Claven2 replied "That's actually a 1939 Izhevsk M91.30. It has a correct late 1930's era stock with screwed in escutcheons and the finish looks above average. Please do not refinish it. 1939's with minty bores and proper period stocks are uncommon.

25 yards indoor, shooting at a 8.5x11" printer paper target. I'm a beginner, can't shoot too well with anything I have yet, so I'm not sure what to say here. I did shoot a bullseye at 25yds with the 1891/30. Best I have done is a 1.5" grouping of 5 at 25yds with my SKS, sitting down, but I find the sights on the SKS to be superior to the Mosin. Can barely see the little slot on the rear sight of the Mosin. Like I said, I'm a beginner. If any skilled shooters at my club want to try it out, they can and will report back.

A co-worker who has military training said he would show me how to shoot properly, but after 6 months has not.

For me, if I can get 5 on paper at 25yds, in some sort of grouping, I'm happy with my beginner status.

After a second 40 round shoot, the rifle warmed up nicely and to my surprise was still sweating out cosmoline. How much of this crap is in there? It's not as much as last time, so I'm assuming it's going to secrete this stuff for a few more shoots?

A guy told me to wrap it in an old towel and put it on my dashboard, in the sun for 1-2 days. Not sure I want to put my rifle on my dashboard, so hopefully after a few more shoots it will be dry.

Better to do a detailed cleaning by hand than letting the outdoor elements do it.

Did you completely take it apart? Removing the two rings, to free the handguard, then the two screws to free the trigger/mag assembly and the barreled receiver?

Then, use paint thinner and rags, an toothbrush, etc. for detailed work.

I disassembled completely, soaked the bolt assembly (all pieces), mag assembly in soapy water. Those are clean. Steamed the stock, over hot water, most came out, apparently not all. Used bore cleaner and patches through the bore.

Still some sweating at the handguards. I'm sure some is still present on the outside of the receiver, so I will clean throughly.

The Russian SKS I bought was sparkling clean. This cosmo stuff is a pain in the a$$.

Disassemble the bolt and clean it properly - trust me. Here is a good tutorial (I have to think it's good since I wrote it - lol).

MFS non-corrosive ammo. No ventilation, doesn't matter what I shoot, I'm breathing in lots of bad stuff... never heard this about surplus ammo.
