I know that a 22lr really isn't a long range precision rifle but I am trying to get as much accuracy as I can out of this rifle before moving on to the next step. Also I am sure that most on this forum have had work done or work on their own rifles in the persuit of accuracy, and I am hoping might recognize my problem.

So

Gun, CZ 452 with Varmint barrel, new 2 months ago, Tasco 6-24 x 42 scope

Modifications to date, new trigger spring ( 1-2 lb) and floated the barrel and had to use some bedding around the bolt that fastens the barrel to the stock to get the barrel to float and not have any tension on the barrel or the stock.

Problem,
First round at 50 yrd is 3" high and 3" left of ctr, every round after that will go into a 1" circle with most going into a 1/2" circle so the gun can shoot. If I let the gun sit for 20 min and start again it will do the same thing, and as long as I keep loading and shooting the bullets go right where I want them to.

Any suggestions at this point will help and be very much appriciated. Also thanks to all that have posted on this forum, it is some of the best and most informative reading I think I have ever read about firearms.

Thanks for the thought scott,

Still sitting on the fence about how often to clean a .22lr right now if the rifle is going to sit for a few days I will clean it and light oil the barrel. This problem keeps coming up with either clean or dirty barrel.

Any other thought on this. Would really like to get this rifle to shoot this well with every shot, including the first one.

Thanks

Wes -

Based on your description of the problem, I am at a loss as to the cause. Clearly if there was a problem with the firearm or ammo, the problem would not always be on the first shot, now that you have eliminated the possibility of a film of oil. By any chance, could your physical position be different for the first shot than for subsequent shots? I'm thinking about parallex, if your eye is not directly centered on the scope it could throw a shot out of the group.

Boomer,

I am shooting off of a concrete bench, using a bipod on the front sling pin and a sand bag to stabalize the back of the rifle.

I am pretty sure that I am shooting the same way through the entire set, with bolt action I am pretty much required to reset myself after every shot so I don't think that is it.

It has been suggested that it is something to do with the bedding between the gun and the stock so I am going to start playing there and see if I can make it go away.

Other than the first shot the gun seems to be shooting just fine. was shooting 100 yrd friday evening with clear calm conditions and shot my first 3/8" center to center group ( 5 shot) From what I have read for a .22lr in relativly stock form this is pretty decent. Ultimatly I would love to see that kind of performance very time I shoot it though.

Thanks for the suggestion though, I will report back when I have come up with some kind of answer for it.
