Ive done a decent amount of trap shooting with my relatives Beneli semi auto and i seem to do well with it. Whats out there for 2k and under for a starter?
Almost every gun reviewer claim that these Turkish made bullpup shotguns are great for stuff like hunting and trap. Seeing that all of these bullpups are way under the $1000 price point, I say give one of these a shot.
If you do well with a Benelli auto then go buy one of those. After a while you will figure out what you want. Trapshooters seldom buy one gun and stick with it.

If I was on the market for a trap gun for under $2000, I'd probably look for an older Citori Trap 30" barrels with fixed IM/Full. I'd be buying it for the idea of expanding into Bunker. You can find them for about $1000 - $1500. If I had to have a new gun, then I'd probably go for a Huglu HT-14 or an Akkar Churchill 206 Trap.
I think you answered your own question. If all you're looking to do is shoot a few rounds of casual trap now and again then just get a Benelli identical to what you are using now. If however you're looking to shoot high volumes and becoming seriously involved then you are entering a whole different realm and will want a dedicated trap gun. As mentioned an older Browning Citori or Beretta 682, something along those lines will serve you well.
The Gun Dealer in McAdam, NB has an older Citori Trap Combo listed for $1999...would be a hard gun to beat in that price range if it is in good shape. 34" single and 32" o/u bbls.
A first gun should be an all-round gun. The OP might be shooting trap now but may want to try other games and a trap gun is a limited in what else it can do. A modern semi-auto with choke tubes and a barrel length between 26 and 28 inches is the best choice IMO. No ancient Auto 5s and certainly no bullpups.
