I'm looking at a mossberg 500 from cabelas.ca and think I'm going to go with a 3 1/2 inch load, which brings me to my question. Will a shotgun with a 3 1/2 inch chamber shoot a 2 3/4's and a 3' shell. I apologize if this is a really simple questions. I have not taken my PAL yet, (this weekend actually happy valentines day!)

I want something very multi purpose, I'll probably only buy one gun for some time, and want something I can use for anything from trap shooting to possibly deer hunting as well as something with lots of power.

aye. 3 1/2 inch chamber will hold anything shorter than it. it'll hold 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. jsut remember though, you cant use anything longer than what the data stamp says itll hold. other wise you could end up with a burst barrell.

hoep this helped

Most people will tell you 3 1/2" isn't really necessary, as you will find out soon enough I hope, that 3" mag 00buck or slug rounds will already kick the crap out of you.

But if you insist on 3 1/2" yes it will take anything from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2" rounds. The reverse is not true of course.

Trap shooting is quite a different sport from deer hunting. Using the same shotgun is do-able. But not recommend (by me anyway).

You may want to double check the length of the barrel on your mossberg 500 too, anything under 26" won't do for trap shooting.

Think about how often & likely you are gonna do one of your listed activities. I would get a more trap oriented gun if I lived in the city, go hunting maybe twice a year and mostly likely shoot trap the rest of the weekends. That's my situation anyway, though that didn't stop me from getting guns for hunting purposes. LOL

thanks all for the great responses. Your situation is about mine exactly. I live in Niagara and will spend the majority of time trap shooting.

When your researching for your first gun its nice to think its a jack of trades and ready for anything from clay to polar bears I guess.

By looking at the mossberg 500 I would guess $$ is a bit of issue here. I was gonna recommend Beretta 391, which is a good all around gun, for trap & general bird hunting.

But if you look around for a used Remington Wingmaster with a monte carlo stock, it will do pretty good for trap (singles) and a bit of hunting, and be in your budget as well.

The Mossberg 500 is chamber for 3" only if you are shopping for 3'5" then its either the 535 or 835 you are looking for.

May I ask what you using the gun for?
