Hi,

At my place in CDN, I seen SKSs from two local hunting/fishing stores: One has Tula refurbs (a little BBQ) for 199$, the one i seen was a 1954. I also seen a nice Izzy 1954 that looks non-refurb but in good general condition, also for 199$.

As I'm looking for a plinker, I'm hesitating between the really nice Izzy for the relative better overall look and original finish on the metal parts, and the refurb, that "might" be a better performer if "Ivan" did a real decent job at refurbishing...

Dilemma?

I don't know about actual barrel condition, im not much of a connoisseur. I just dig the SKS! Also, $229 for a 1320 rounds crate of Romanian corrosive ammo. Any better ones out there in terms of surplus stuff?

Good prices on both items. Buy them all. lol. Both guns will function like a tank. Not much difference. Just pick the nicer looking one and go with it. You cant go wrong. Dont think too much about it, you will be happy. Good luck.

Take her home and give her a bath with soap , brush, and boiling water in the tub for the metal parts. It will take a bit of effort to get all the cosmo out of the stock, I elected to just re-finish mine.

I fully agree; but the nicer of the two and take care of it. You'll never be able to tell you've shot it if you take excellent care of it! That, and if you screw it up - but another one ;)

Go for the Izzy if it is a nicer rifle for the same price....Issyies are a bit more rare than Tulas are . If you are going to use corr. ammo , make sure you clean the rifle well right after every use or you may run into problems...ENJOY !

I wouldn't say there are many SKS's coming up for sale now... not as many as before. Just buy it, clean it every time you use corrosive ammo. Great rifles for the price and are a lot of fun. I think I'm going to buy another one for sh!ts and giggles.

When the chance occurs, always buy the Izzy.
Late year SKS seem to often be lazers, while my 50, not so much.
So yeah,
53, 54 Izzy.
55, 56/blank/no year Tula.

All else being equal, the Izzy is somewhat more desirable, but not enough to make or break a deal.

Bore condition is priority one, followed by overall mechanical integrity (decent fit, smooth operation, no rust or pitting...). Outward appearance is somewhat of a red herring, since a beat-up gun with good internals will beat a pretty junker every time.

Ok,

just waiting for the paperwork for the buying permit to show up and I'll grab the Izzy. Might as well put a deposit on it! They had Mosins for $149 also, so it might be my second purchase, although the one I seen the stock was brutal...

Good call on the Izzy… I think they look sharper as there bluing is deeper.

I have yet to see a shortage around Edmonton.

I take it you mean you are waiting for your PAL? otherwise what are you talking about? buying permit?

Yea I think he means PAL, good Idea to put money down on it! If someone sees the IZZY it may walk on you! Make sure you clean it well before shooting! Get lots of ammo,, talk the guy down on the Mosin, ( it might work) Make sure you get all the gear that comes with the SKS and Mosin Cleaning kit, ammo pouches, oiler can and usually sling! Youtube has a few videos on cleaning and field stripping these rifles and the stickies at the top of this red section have valuable info too!

I had a ton of grief with the last corrosive ammo I used with my baby-killing CZ858. I had to clean the damned thing about 5 times. I tried windex, soap and boiling water, Hoppe's, and I finally did the trick we used in the army and I brought it into the shower with me (giggity). I see a lot of bulk deals now on non-corrosive 7.62, and I'd eat the $$$ difference. My two cents, anyways.

Also, there's a ton of knowledge on these things on Youtube (as well as the wealth of info here on this forum). Mine came with no instruction manual, and I went on Youtube and had the thing completely stripped for cleaning in about 15 minutes. Very easy. I'm torn between getting one of the Archangel stocks for it, or leaving it. Mine's a Russian with the dark wood, and it looks too beautiful to modernize. methinks I might have to buy another one, lol.
