Hi guys I just bought my first SKS, it's a 53 Tula with all matching numbers. Not sure how to post pics but will once I figure it out. I just spent a couple hours cleaning cosmoline out of my new baby and can't wait to burn through the 800 rounds in my basement. One question, when I open the bolt mechanism how do I close it other than reaching in and pressing down on the locking mechanism? Any advice is welcome. Thanks Jesse
 
If the magazine is empty, you either need to push down the follower, as you've found out, or release the magazine latch. That will swing the mag body and follower out of the way, then pull the bolt back and let it go forward.

Open the magazine, pull the bolt back so there is no pressure on the bolt stop and the bolt lock should fall down and out of the way, provided it isn't covered in goo.
 
Just open the mag and pull back on the handle.. the action will close. I also dont recommend you shoot 800 rounds in the basement.. lol;)
