So I know this has been asked in some variation or another but I'm not buying barrels and stocks and the jazz and making the jump to a chassis just yet. I have built or Lego'ed 10/22s a few times but not at all about to attempt that.

I have a 200yd range. Shot a friends a7 in 300wm.dont like it. Call me a wimp that's OK I'm 6'3 230 but do not like leaving the range with a headache. Dont know if it's light gun or what but it just sucks. Lol Most of my shooting experience with larger calibre is a family members 700 308 in MacMillan. Heavy..... Better

Anyway bc of limitation at range I want a 223.not really a budget in mind. Sub 1k for gun probably close to the same for scope. What is the best 223/scope combo that I could buy and enjoy out of the box until I get my round count up and learn the fundamentals? Later as long as the enjoyment and learning are there I want to consider larger and a precision stock but baby steps

Tikka Varmint with any scope you like...200 yards is your zero, so there is no benefit at your range for ballistic turrets or compensating reticles. I would put a Vortex Viper on it if you are unsure what you want as they have decent resale value and are a good bang for the buck.

Thank you for quick reply. I want to hear from anyone with experience so please suggest away. Freezer filler I just looked at viper. Since my max currently is 200 yards what is suggested for magnification at this distance?i don't know if it is just me but I have a Savage bsev with a 6-16 and I love zoom. Is it best to always go higher so you have it even though you may just play around in lower power? As I mentioned I may not keep it forever so I guess I could upgrade later. Is ao any advantage or pointless at this range. I feel I should minimize moving parts and focus on skills

I would always recomend a Tikka T3, but I doubt you can find one new and a decent scope for under 1k. Maybe look for a used one, or look at a Weatherby Vanguard s2. my Vanguard s1 is a real tack driver and the s2 are better.

A nice 700 sps tactical. 20" pipe, snd a nice bushnell elite would be a solid start. Nearly unlimited upgrade potential down the line. Those 2 can go for sub 800 bucks if you look enough.

Sorry I meant under 1k for the rifle and under 1k for the scope so under 2k total. Shooting for 1500 budget thereabouts. It may sound stupid but I have a hard time buying used...unless I can hold it prior. I'm probably going to go new for this. It's an ocd thing. I buy new and it's all up to me to get it right and if it gets marked up its me who did it. Weird but I'm sure someone will understand.

I see the tikka t3 varmint heavy barrel on cabelas but don't think I see 223. I'll investigate some more. And yeah NOM4D I was looking at 700 because of the abundance of after market and maybe I'm not changing the entire rifle out in a couple years. I honestly know nothing about tikka and will go learn. Just 700 because of the proximity of one and it's owner. I'm sure all the aftermarket stuff is just as available if tikka is being suggested

Another vote for a Remington 700 with some kind of varmint contour barrel. I met one of the challenges here with the one I had.....and sold :( . Take a look at the Sightron line of scopes. They are good and reasonably priced. Try for something that zooms up to about 20x. You will easily see the holes at 200. As well, if you decide to spend more on the scope, you can always move it to the next gun.

The Savage LRPV would be a good bet - will shoot tiny groups! Actually all of the rifles mentioned are good choices. If i may add, make sure you get the right twist for the bullets you plan to shoot. Personally i would go 1-8 or max 1-9. 1-8 will let you stretch it out if you get to a longer range and reload in the future.

AO is very important. If you take a rifle with any scope and put it on a rest so it is very steady, look at your target and move your head around. If the cross hairs stay on the same spot, the scope is adjusted correctly...for that range. Try it at 50, 100, and 200 yards and see how it does.

Narrowed down to t3 varmint heavy or 700.rate of twist was one of my other questions. I see the tactical is 16 other 700 is 20 inch. Cpl different rate if twist with tikka and it's 23 3/4. Will the extra inches benefit this round? Was getting the up sell when I bought my rimfire scope but I did not see the benefit on a shorter range rimfire. The distance ao is needed I could probably spit harder at the target than a 22 could do. Just setting up reloading station so it will be factory for awhile.

I was using 70 gr in my 1-9 rem 700 when I had it. Any bull barrel will keep the groups tight, yes there will be a slight difference between carbon and stainless, but sub 300 m it makes no difference.

Optic wise there are a few questions. Are you looking for FFP or SFP? High mag or low? Fixed, or variable? Compact, or stupid big with the ridiculously long scope shade?

223 has no recoil, so allot of lower end scope will work fine, but the finish and performance will lack.

Have a look at millett, barska, sightmark, and perhaps sightron.

Hi thanks for message. Optic wise I'm a dummy. This is my first jump into this really so after you asked I did some research. My research just led to more questions lol. for someone new to higher power optic and longer range shooting which between ffp and sfp is the better choice?
I'm thinking not stupid big but again it's a bench gun and if it ends up being stupid big with the sunshade I'm not totally against it. I would like variable magnification to probably 20 or more. I like zooming in close on target and have used an ffp with open circle crosshair and fine crosshair. That may answer my question above guess This may sound stupid but I'd rather put more more money into higher power optics than a spotting scope for one rifle. I'm open to any and all advice. I am really leaning towards tikka. I have Nikon and vortex scopes and like them both so possibly one of those two. I'd like to scope it for 800 or less seeing that I will need mount rings and the tikka is couple hundred more than 700.

Most scopes come with rings, so no worries, if not, it's a 223, buy some decent aluminum rings for like, 40 bucks.

Optic wise I'd recommend:

FFP will let you keep ur scale at all variations of magnification, but a fixed scope can do that too. I've had fabulas experience with the barska fixed 40x50.

Glass is a pain in the ass to chose, I have one low brand scope (discovery 5-25x50) and 2 S&B PmII 3-12x50. One I just switch around all the time.

I just recently purchased a Tikka T3 varmint in .223 (1-8 twist) and I love it! Topped it off with a bushnell 6500 2.5-16x and is perfect for the 300 yard range I shoot at
