How much target and how much hunting do you plan to do? Check the shell costs which may also lead you in a different direction.
Everyone has their own likes and disikes in calibers so you have to make that decision for yourself. You may actually go through a few rifles and calibers before you find what you really like and shoots best for you. You may want to look for something that is quite common and easy to re-sell if you want to change. Remington 700, Winchester 70, etc.
Pick one, learn it, enjoy it and most off all be safe!

If you are looking for an economical deer rifle you might consider a military surplus Lee Enfield. .303 is a good calibre for almost anything you would want to put in the freezer and you can get a reliable rifle for low $$$.
