I have shot Sks's and Cz 858's before so I am familiar with the caliber but man, this gun is fun to shoot!

I started off with the gas setting on 4 as per the manual and fired 70 rds. of Hornady factory ammunition. I then switched to corrosive surplus for the remainder of the day with the gas setting on 3. In total I think I fired around 400 rds.

Here is the empty ammo boxes, that's a lot of fun right there.

The targets were two AR500 steel gongs and an old cookie sheet. The sights were pretty much dead on. Some bench rest shooting will come later. I have not decided on an optic yet.

After that, a hot bath for the barrel in some boiling water and a good wipe down with some Ballistol.

Here is the rifle after a good cleaning.

I removed the barrel to clean the rifle because I think it is the easiest and most thorough way of getting rid of the corrosive salts.

Over all I am very happy with the rifle. As you can see in the video there were several malfunctions but I put those on the RA 10rd pistol mags. They were all purchased here in Canada from a RA distributor. Any time I loaded over 8 rds. I could see the follower tilting.

I dismount my barrel once a year and all I shoot is corrosive. I'm not a fan of having to re-zero it after every cleaning. I did paint the barrel under the handguard to avoid the exhaust gas causing pitting. It's a PITA to get all the gunk off the barrel when you leave it on the rifle.

Re the mags: the follower has to tilt, otherwise the rounds wouldn't feed properly. It's due to the case taper of the 7.62x39. If you take the mags apart you'll find the front leg of the follower has been mostly removed. You may want to bevel the front edge of the mag and take the sharp edges off the feed lips to improve feeding.

I've found mine will run on 2 all day long with any type of ammo, and on 1 with Chinese surplus.

Wikid man! The new keymod xcr's are a cut above the older models. I love mine!

Good stuff Mississauga.
I've got 2 mags that do the same. It used to be 3, but use fixed 1 of them.
The bullet was tilting down and the bolt was passing right over top the case. I've tried bending the top coil of the spring, but the 2 refuse to cooperate.
Those 3 mags were bought together, in June. I've never had a problem with my 11 other mags.

Looking forward to updates.

Was this at a gun range. Which one.

I asked about my club letting us use steel targets....and got banned from the club forum. LOL They think the bullet will bounce off the steel on hit a house 3 miles away.

I have the last generation before the keymod and haven't had a chance to shoot a keymod in comparison but I would definitely love to. With that being said I love mine and am glad to hear your loving yours as well. They've come along way from the first gens.

Interesting. I have similar problems with the RA mags. Maybe it's only an issue if it's loaded above 8 rounds like you said. I will try this! Thanks.

Must be a 7.62*39 thing I don't have any problems with my 10rnders in 223

It's definitely a x39 thing, having the tapered case.
I've already mentioned, I have 11 of 14 mags that have never had a problem. The last 3 mags were bought together, and all prone to feed problems.
I've taken the springs out of the new mags and compared to the older ones. There's a difference the way the spring supports the follower. Old springs in new mags, no problem. New springs in old mags, problem.

I was looking at buying a used x39 kit and they guy selling it said he had issues with the mags too. im on the fence

Here is another update on the XCR.

I took it to my club today and played on the 50yrd range.
I fired 180 rds of corrosive surplus.

I was trying to sight it in with the stock iron sights. I noticed that the barrel bolt became loose after about 75 rounds. I managed to tighten it and continued. I had a lot fewer magazine failures this time. In fact they seemed to be focused on one or two magazines in specific. The rifle itself was flawless. I lowered the gas setting to 1 and have had no issues with cycling or ejection patterns.

One curious issue. When I was initially sighting in the rifle it was shooting high. I raised the front sight and eventually got it where I wanted it. I then tightened the barrel bolt. After this it was shooting to the right. I had to adjust the rear sight about 10 clicks to get it to shoot center. I do not have a torque wrench that reads in inch pounds so I will have to buy one this weekend. Any suggestions?

I am getting pretty good at tearing the rifle down and cleaning it with boiling water. It took me about 20 minutes tonight. Not bad for being able to shoot cheap surplus out of a non restricted rifle using 10 rd magazines.

I am thinking of putting an optic on the rifle, perhaps a 1-4 power scope with an illuminated reticle. Any suggestions?

Ok, so another range trip with the XCR and things are looking better. I had a lot fewer issues with the 10rd XCR pistol magazines. Maybe they need to be broken in.

I mounted a Vortex 1-4 scope and ran about 200 rounds of Russian surplus through the rifle.

Here are some pictures of my targets, one at 50 yds and one at 100 yds. The shots in the middle of the 50 yd target are where I was sighting in the scope. I was not too impressed with the groups at 100 but it is surplus ammunition. I will try a higher quality ammunition some time.
