First time shooting a gun today!

First time out hunting also, we saw nothing but I still fired off a round for my first shot ever, I hit the target dead on, it was a .308 Winchester Lever Action Model 99 Savage, it was a lot louder than I expected but the kickback was not as bad as I thought it was going to be! Previous to this I have only shot pellet and bb guns. This was truly a fun learning experience! One day this gun will be handed down to me along with a .32 Winchester Special Model 94!

P.S. the .308 had a over and under (under and over) sight/scope which I think is pretty badass!

I will take pictures next time I get a chance, but it was smooth when I pulled that trigger it felt real good. Too bad the target wasn't a real deer!

If that was your first shot, how did you zero your rifle? How did you know for sure that it would actually hit were you were aiming?

Good for you! :dancingbanana:

Just a suggestion, you may want to practice a little more before shooting at game. They tend to dislike being wounded and not dying real fast. ;)

I'm a little confused, the Winchester model 99 is a .22 rimfire, another rifle the Savage 99 is a lever action that was offered in .308.......what were you shooting?

Im not sure I just used it the way my grandfather told me, followed his instructions, put what I wanted to hit on the crosshairs, exhaled and click BOOM

Yes, but if you never actually fired the rife before, how did you know for sure that your eyes are the same as the guy who sighted in (Zeroed) the rifle? You must shoot the rifle grasshopper, at a range, at a measured distance before you hunt with it. Basically, you can not teach experience, please get some and have fun. You should shoot at least a couple of boxes of ammo before hunting with any rifle you are not used to then hunt with the same ammo you zeroed and shot your rifle with before the hunt. At what distance was the "target" you hit the bullseye at? Please note, I am not trying to discourage you, I want you to get better, I want you to get really good so you will have a more enjoyable hunting experience.

By the way, the Savage 99 in .308 is one of the strongest lever action guns ever built, decently accurate and quite fun to use. Does your have a detachable magazine or do you load it from the top?
