I am thinking about buying a Simonov SKS and have a few questions. Is one year better from another? Also, what are the pros and cons and what can I expect for shooting accuracy with stock sights? Any other info or opinions are welcome.

and if you're too lazy to search within it:

And search function. This topic get's repeated lots. General consensus: Get one.

If that's too much info to digest:
Pre '51 have spring assisted firing pins. Everyone else doesn't. Other modifications here on out are rather external. Spring assisted firing pins make it easier to shoot commercial ammo and lowers slam fires in a dirty gun. Accuracy is about 2-5 MOA. Some are worse, some are better. It's a hit and miss ordeal provided the shooter to do his/her work. Non refurbed pre '51 don't have chrome lined bores. Everyone else does. No overall effect besides increase corrosion resistance on chromed ones. All reliable, build heavy, built strong, simple to take down and low maintenance. Good 100m rifle, but most consider 300m the limit of being effective (even if the sights denote 1000m). I think that's about it. For $200, you can't go wrong. If you can't pick a nice one out in person, contact westrifle. He's got nice one's on his website.

Find the best deal you can on a refurb - then shoot the crap out of it. Once you have a few hundred rounds down the spout you can decide if you need to get picky about your next one. SKS rifles are like SKS owners - They're happiest in a group :)

NOTE: CGN Guidelines clearly state that CGN members participating in the Red Rifle Forum MUST own more than one SKS.

Some people after late production 55-56. I personally prefer 52-53 for some reason. If you read the sticky that Curtton made maybe you can figure it for yourself. What is your preference?

I think everyone should own at least one. Best dam plinker for the money. It's a Canadian tradition to have at least one or more SKS's. It's our heritage. ;)

yeah right....it is our heritage to have things in common with Ruscomm warped socialist-commie state. If this is the path we are moving, I am packing, selling my SKSs and going south of the border.
The only good thing that came out of that god forsaken place is their cheap cheap SKS but please, let's not call it heritage......oops....I just swallowed my vomit.

I think what he meant was "cheap" was a Canadian tradition, the poster was just joking, IMO. Don't forget we had Pavel Bure, that was good for a couple years.:D

Of course, I was joking too
however, let's not forget for what purpose these rifles were built originally and many good Canadians and Americans died from them trying to stop the onslaught of evil baby eating communism. After so many years it is cheap fun, I do agree.

...but I am completely off topic here.
Either way, I just picked up an SKS and as soon as I left Lebaron, I regretted I didn't buy two. I feel incomplete. I will certainly make a trip back to Lebaron.
