Hi,

I'm looking forward to my first turkey hunt in about a month. Can you recommend a good first turkey call I should get? I've looked at the articles in a couple of magazines, and they all seem geared to folks with a wealth of experience. Too many options to choose, and I don't know the strengths or weaknesses of each type.

Thanks in advance,

My first call was a box call. Very easy to operate and they dont sound that bad. But a mouth call is by far the best... once you get the hang of it. You need to practice with any call you get before you go in the wood. I would suggest going to the stores and play with a few and pick the one that sounds the best to you. I would also pick up a mouth call and start practicing!

+1 Start with the box call. Very simple to use. Check the web for some videos and audio. I have a wing bone call that I made that I am hoping to try out this spring. Have fun!

I'm in the same boat. The instructor guy at the turkey course a couple weeks ago recommended an "Easy Yelper" call. One-handed operation, simple to use, etc. Might try to find one of those to start out with. Good luck with your hunt, I can't wait to give it a try.

Use a call that you can learn to run without difficaulty. None of the calls other then a mouth call is really that hard to learn.

Mouth calls take sometime and are a great way to limited movement but are not the only call that kills birds on a ongoing bases. Friction calls take as many birds as a mouth call just the caller needs to learn when to set down the call.

Push button calls are a great and easy tool but you are limited to volume and under some cases volume can become a tool to place a bird in front of you in range. Find a call that will work in a number different ways...

There are some great videos on Youtube in regards to turkey calling and the different tools. I use the Box Caller and the mouth calls. Each year I get better I think with the mouth calls. My wife will say different when I practice around the House and get the dog barking :)

+1 on the Hatchet. Great first call.

I started out with a push/pull call, made of mahogany and birch top. It was good, kind of tough for combining cuts and yelps but it worked great for yelps.
