Hello first of all, I apologize if this is the wrong board to be posting this.

I recently came across an m98 12g barreled action that I believe is a GEHA for $175. I have had the pictured kar98 stock for close to 2 decades, it was bought for me by my mother at an army surplus store when I was very young and it has just been floating around ever since. I have recently been wanting to throw something into it just for the novelty of making it into a functioning firearm after such a long time. Yes I HAVE seen the 6.5 actions, and I'm not particularily interested in them.

I am prepared to do some fitting work, removing some wood to get the barrel to actually fit in the stock. I'm more here to ask for advice on the best way to achieve this, I was planning on dremelling everything down until the barrel seats nicely enough. But I would like to know if there are any good products or tricks to get everything to fit really nicely once I do the dremel work (some sort of filler) since the chances of me actually making a perfect fit with a dremel are slim to none. Im also hoping to keep the handguard/upper piece of wood, I'm not huge on the sporterized look, I'm aware the barrel bands will become useless, so any sort of advice in that aspect would be greatly appreciated.

Im aware what Im asking for could seem a bit silly in some ways, that's why I'm asking you all for your advice.

on a sidenote if anyone knows of any cheap 8mm mauser actions, barreled or otherwise for the ~$200 area please inform me.

Rather than altering an as-issued stock, get one that has already been sported or altered. Sell yours, buy the sported one, and you will be ahead of the game.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with Geha's or not so if I'm telling you what you already know I apologize.
There are two safety issues you should know about. The first is that to work with the 12ga cartridge a separate bolt head was required. I've seen some guns missing this bolt head, BUT THE GUN WILL FIRE WITHOUT IT with disastrous results.
Also, some guys buy these guns thinking they can build a strong 98 mauser slug gun. But a 12ga shell is LARGER then the locking lugs. That's why a new bolt head is necessary. The locking lugs in the receiver are machined away in the conversion process. The bolt handle and safety lug are all that holds these things together.
I'm not trying to rain on ya, or be a troll, I'm just saying please be careful.
