fitting a bolt in old .22

I've got an old model 1904 savage .22 single shot. It was missing a bolt until i found a parts gun (same model). Unfortunately the newly aquired bolt will not fit. How do you open up the receiver to accept the bolt?

Are the two guns the exact same model? Does the bolt slide in but not want to turn or rotate to lock? I believe you alter the bolt not the receiver. If you alter the receiver and you do something wrong you are hooped, but if you do something wrong with the bolt , you can always get another bolt.
