I recently purchased a Remington 870 with a Pachamyr Decelerator recoil pad that is larger than the stock. How do I shape the pad to match the diameter of the butt? Grind?

Yep. A bench mounted belt sander is the best and easiest. Put several layers of masking tape on the stock and sand off the excess pad. A rotary tool will do, but it'll take longer. Grinding, generally, is too coarse and you'll still have to finish it by sanding. Don't forget the eye protection.

I did it two days ago with the same recoil pad you bought, the recoil pad was only a millimeter larger around the bottom so I did it with a sanding block with super fine paper because I didnt' want to over do it and to not getting it to look all nasty and torn. I did the lotsa tape like sunray(good pointer dude!) so if you see scratches on the tape you know you're about to start digging in the stock.

I read somewhere that Decelerators grind better when they just come out off the freezer. I haven't tried it and probably won't as I hate grinding pads.

Don't let the rubber over heat.
