I am looking for ideas and if there are any other options and if anyone can advise me of any particular choices available. These are for my 5.56 mouse guns.

Lots of time on service Elcans. I love that simple thick pointy reticle picket.
Great glass, a useful fixed power and that obvious thick pointy reticle picket. Only time, age and deteriorating eye sight has ruled out the C79s for me due to horribly short eye relief. I wind up pushing my face into touching the scope.

So what am I looking for?
Fixed power, best between three to four power.
Big obvious reticle. I like the german fence picket or Elcan style pointy picket, but not necessarily wedded to it. Let's just say if I have to search for the reticle because it is so fine, then maybe it is a pass.
Fair amount of eye relief, hopefully 60mm or better.
And a price that won't kill me.

What have I been playing with are some of the following.

Pilad PO 3.5x20, looks like an old Mosin scope with a great obvious reticle. Very compact and lightweight. Only they adjust off centre and might not be the best quality thing.

ZF1 4x24 German surplus like you used to find on the squad designated marksman G3. Fits the bill well, light compact with decent eye releif and the fairly thick picket reticle. Only problem is that they come with the two stud mounts under the scope body for the 1970s STANAG mount which are harder to figure out how to put on a weaver.

My other options are HiLux CMR 1-4x24, Belomo POSP 4x24, IOR 4x24,,, but I suppose I am looking more for a smaller more compact than a traditional scope.

Any ideas?

German #1 has the "picket" you're looking for, but AFAIK they're no longer produced. You can sometimes find German #4, which are similar. Leupold and Bushnell are the most recent ones I've seen.

Not many fixed power options out there anymore... You may be best buying 1-4x and leaving it on 4x.

OP - I am not sure of your needs or preferences. You should try to become familiar with the older Weaver scopes with the Post and Crosshair - might be the reticle that you want. A lot of other issues with 1950's era scopes, though, that might not make them suitable for you. K2.5, K3, K4 and so on - various fixed powers - were considered to be economical and truly were "tough enough" scopes for hunting rifles. I have seen several WTS ads for Lee Enfield No. 4 rifles with a Weaver K2.5 or K3 - straight tube - no objective bell - as "stand-ins" for "wanna-be" sniper rifles...

There were several series of Weaver scopes - K3-60, K3-60B, K3-60C, etc. as the years went by. About the "best" was the "dash I" or "dash II" - so K3-II - they were sealed scopes I believe - will say MICRO TRAC on left side of top turret if it has those guts. But none will have lens coating like available today - may or may not be an issue for you.
