Fixed power scope choice

I just picked up a Forbes Model 20B in 7-08. Now I have to choose a scope.

I must admit I am wavering. Don't know whether I should get a variable or fixed 6x. The problem is this gun has a 90 degree bolt lift and tends hit or have minimal clearance with the big eye pieces that come on most variable scopes nowadays. This has got me seriously thinking about a fixed 6x. What would be your thoughts? I live in Alberta and most of my hunting is on mixed farmland. My shots never exceed 400 yards. I'm old-school and think its unethical, and that if I can't get closer, I'm not that great of a hunter. My concern with a fixed 6x is having too much scope for when an animal comes running across a cutline quickly at close range, and I don't want a 4x.

Help me decide.

Currently, I am leaning toward a FX3 6x42, but am wide open to suggestions.

Weaver Classic line scopes don't have those bigger bells that get in the way so much and they are good value. Look at their fixed power K4 (4x38), K6 (6x38), or variable V9 (3-9x38). Made in Japan, fully multi-coated optics, made to withstand recoil of 10,000 rounds of .375H&H, lifetime warranty for original owner.
I use a K4 on a .308Winchester for deer hunting and a K6 on a .223Remington for coyotes.

I'd use fixed 6x scopes more if they were more generally available. As it is, I mosty hunt with my 3-9's set on 5 or 6 power and don't change it for quick close shots or far shots for that matter. I did shoot a fast running buck at 42 feet distance two years ago with a fixed 6x. I think you'll be fine with a fixed 6x.

First post. I have been looking for a Weaver K4. Does anyone in Saskatoon sell them, or mail order in Canada?

Thanks.

The FX-3 6 X 42 is so easy to get along with that you are unlikely to have any problem with it. Its a hard thing to describe. Having said that; my FX-3 eye-piece is 1.555" in diameter and so are the eyepieces on the VX-3s I just checked.
