Hey, I'm new to spotting scopes and hunting in the mountains. I had a question about if there are fixed power spotting scopes. I haven't seen very many on the market. I'd figure, like rifle scopes, they would be cheaper, lighter and more durable. Any reason that it's not a thing? Is it just better to have a variable?

They still have fixed power.

Call Pelee Wings in Leamington Ontario www peleewings.ca, many scopes have optional eye pieces.

Depending on how much you can afford to spend, check out ebay and look for some of the good oldies... You might be surprised how good an old scope can be like a Bushnel Sentry from the 60s or something along that line.

There's also old Kowa prominar stuff out there that is fanastic but more than a Bushnell Sentry

I would not buy a spotting scope without interchangeable eyepieces. There are 45-deg shooting spotting scopes, but I have found aiming those is much more difficult than being about to sight with both or one eye equally. And someone has a Bushnell Sentry on fleece bay for C$65 right now. Seller is in the US South - not here on CGN.

I have never used a fixed power, but I can’t imagine a reason why it would preform better for mountain hunting. I don’t know what you are hunting but I have never found too much magnification. Especially when eyeing up sheep at a distance.
