I have the opportunity to buy a 6X scope, and am wondering what the advantages (disadvantages) are over a variable power one. I know that up close, a 6X will probably be a pain. The scope is a Schmith & Bender, and I believe it is going for around $400. What do you think? Thanks!

It depends on what type of shooting or hunting you are going to do. A fixed power scope (especially an S&B ) will be optically sharper and clearer than any variable. But at short ranges it will be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

.... It really comes down to the intended use; a x6 has a fairly narrow field of view, which can make target acquisition a "challenge" that being said, when the light starts to fall off, and if you have time to find the target, a good quality x6 , such as you're looking at, will be sharp and clearly defined ! As long as you don't hunt the heavy bush, and the up close short range stuff, go for it ! ..... David K. .....:canadaFlag:

I own two 6x42 Leupolds, and love them for hunting in open country. If the shots can be 50 yards, a 3-9x40 is much better. But I love the simplicity and ruggedness of a fixed power, and shooting out to 1/4 mile is still doable.

Unless you plan to do most of your hunting up close and personal, a fixed 6x is really a great choice, ESPECIALLY a Schmidt & Bender. It sounds like an excellent deal.

All my hunting rifles now wear that excellent 6x42 Leupold. I don't find them a handicap in any way when hunting unless the target is inside 25 yards. These scopes are rugged, clear and lighter than any 2½-8 or 3x9 variable.
I have shot game at extreme ranges with them, and never felt the need for more power, and these eyes are getting old! Regards, Eagleye.
