I'm looking at building a varminting/plinking rifle on a bit of a budget. This will be my first rifle so I was thinking 223 to keep ammo costs down. If I'm looking to spend 600-800 on a scope is fixed power (6x ) a good option?

Bushnell makes a fixed 10x that is widely accepted as being a good quality, robust scope. Better yet? It's cheap.

If budget is on your mind, nothing wrong with that. For pinking/varminting it'll work just fine.

I would advise you to use Weaver K6x38mm for much wider field of view and sharper glass for the same money.
I use it in my LH Sportco 44 in 225Win up to 400m with excellent results.
10 power scope is to much IMO for 223Rem cal with max useful range of 300 to 350m while hunting varmints.
Your first guess was right on the money and I don't understand that latest optic POWER OBSESSION either.

Good luck ! I'm just jealous ;) my budget scope might be a aim sports 77$ Scout scope from Amazon :s now THATs budget lol
