I removed the scope mounts on my 7X57 mauser to find the rear block fwd screw hole stripped and the threads pulled and the rear screw hole opened up and tapped for what looks like an 8-32 screw, Is it possible to have these holes tig welded and re tapped ? Im sure this will affect the heat treatment but the rear of a mauser action should not be too critical I would think. The holes dont appear to have been drilled with the aid of a jig and dont appear to be on the centerline. Would any of you pro's give me an approx cost to fix this?
thanks
Dave

The best way to fix it is to tightly fit a piece of aluminum underneath the bridge where the screw holes are and then weld the holes with a wire gun from the top. The aluminum stops the steel from flowing through. Afterwards the top needs to be dressed and drilled and tapped.

Heat treat is not critical at all on the rear bridge and with the wire gun it won't change much anyway. An experienced welder should do the welding.

If you had the aluminum piece already fitted I would guess a welder would only charge about $20.

Drilling and tapping about $30 to $50 I would guess.
