Well here is the problem I have. I have a norc 1887 ( I know it's not milsurp) and I had dings I the stock. So I use the water and iron technique. So after what seem like to much rinse iron repeat the ding were still there but I notice the stock started to bloat with lines.

Do anybody have tip how to reverse the swelling?

Or..........Steam it over the kettle spout just a little to dampen the area, then use the back of a spoon to burnish it, ironing out the marks so to speak.

Go gently as it doesn't take much pressure to compress the surface, marking it up and making things worse. If you do it right the finish is left intact.

This is called 'boning'. I use a nicely curved pork rib bone to polish the wood on raised grain walnut.
