***"get ready for 1st July"*** there may be an implicit suggestion here that these are fireworks. They are not. They are an emergency signaling device designed for marine use. Deploying one is the equivalent of dialing 911. Section 372 of the Criminal Code speaks to "false information". I've spent hundreds of hours on the water in vain because some idiot decided that they were fireworks. On a more dangerous note, as they were designed for marine use, they rely on water to extinguish them. They come down to the ground still burning.

Good way to start a forest fire if you're not on the water!

I had a gimp flare once that sort didn't fly very high and landed while still burning, too a bit of effort to get it under control when the grass lit up. I do love shooting them off but I've been very careful since that time.
