I've got an 8.5" 5.56 upper with a standard A2 flash hider on it. I'd like to try something different and I'm having trouble deciding.

I've looked at the PWS CQB 223 that Questar has for 170 but then I started reading good things on the AAC BLACKOUT devices but I don't know what the difference is between the 18t and the 51t models. Both of which CanadaAmmo has for 129 and then CanadaAmmo also has an AAC for 70.00 too but from what I can tell it just doesn't have the threads to attach a suppressor.

I'm leaning towards the PWS as it also directs all the gas forward so the guy next to me on the firing line doesn't get a face full of gas but the AAC's look like they'll also work on a SBR. I'm open to options or any other suggestions, my main focus is to minimize the fireball and not propel gas to the guy next to me so if there's any other device I should be considering let me know.

Thanks

I'm running an AAC blackout 51T on my 10.3 SBR and it's never given me any issues.
As far as the 18 vs 51 T it's irrelevant for your use as you can't use a suppressor anyways. Keep an eye on the EE, I snagged my blackout a few years ago for 70 bucks shipped.

With an 8.5 I'd almost recommend going with the PWS forward comp, anything shorter than a 10.3 and you start getting an obscene amount of concussive force ##### slapping you with every shot.

Depends on what you're looking for. AAC Blackout pretty much eliminates flash. Other options will give some balance between flash reduction and braking. My personal favorites are the Colt Canada C9 brake/flash-hider, and the AAC Blackout (as foxalpha says, which AAC doesn't really matter)

The AAC 51 / 18 T and the PWS CQB are like apples and oranges

PWS doesn't even call it a flash hider...they call it a compensator

No mention of flash hider in description

ht s://primaryweapons.com/store/product/cqb-compensator/

The PWS CQB / Noveske KX3 direct the blast forward . Flash hiders such as the AAC 51 and other "prong style" does nothing to keep the side blast minimized

I guess it boils down to what you want .

My 10.5 and 7.5 ( I have had all manner of flash hider / brakes ) will rattle your head at indoor range or shooting under cover at range

My 7.5 upper once I put a PWS CQB on it was significantly less concussion . Same with Noveske KX3

You don't notice the flash since its straight forward .

All flash hiders will have some flash with a 7.5 / 8.5 ( unless subsonic 300 AAC blackout ) . You really notice in indoor range !

I found the PWS CQB heavier but having said that you wont notice on your 8.5

Lastly if you have cycling issues on the 7.5 / 8.5 s etc , the PWS CQB and KX3 can help by increasing back pressure .

I dont really agree with this statement. The Blastout can easily be found in 51T and is a great accessory for when you want to direct blast down range. Granted it will be less needed on the Flash hider, but i use them on my brake occasionally and love them. (Especially shooting urban prone)

Fair point, although I will stand by my statement when relating blast diffusers to flash hiders. What's the point of adding a flash hider, just to add a secondary device that increases flash? With a brake or a comp there's definitely that niche market that can appreciate those devices, but I've always personally viewed these as more of a "look cool factor" item, opposed to one that has a usefulness across a broad spectrum of shooters and shooting styles. Also known as a marketing gimmick.

Fully Agree with you.

I personally use the combo on my 3gun rifle. The brake works well for speeding things up. The Shield works well if I am sideways in the dirt in a CQB match. I have no need for flash hiders.

Fireballs are cool! lol

There's always a Ferfran CRD but it's definitely not a flash suppressor 'cause I've seen some cool fire balls coming out of it.

Thanks everyone,

I'm leaning towards the PWS but again I keep looking at things and I came across this from dlask

Dlask Arms Corp. XB-6 Flash Hider / Muzzle Brake

"Dlask Arms Corps. latest product in our XB series of compensators / brakes. The XB-6 combines the best of both, a real Jack of all trades doing the job of both reducing rifle recoil and helping to hide the muzzle flash. These come threaded for 1/2" x 28 tpi only with an exit hole for .223/5.56 caliber. The exit hole can be opened for .30 caliber upon request.
Finished in matte blued."

As for cycling issues I haven't had any, I used to run it with just a standard carbine buffer but I didn't like that the brass was ejecting always at 3 o'clock so I replaced the buffer with a H2 buffer and now the brass doesn't hit the shooter next to me anymore. I appreciate everyone's opinion and personal experiences, as all I've run is the standard a2 bird cage and haven't had experience with anything else.

Are you expecting to buy a silencer anytime soon? Get the standard Blackout.

All the devices that are "designed" to reduce both flash and recoil or blast do both jobs very poorly.

Anyone try the S&J Hardware "Nano" Linear COMP on their 7.5"-10" ARs? The price is right, how's the performance? How does it stack up to comps like the Noveske?
