So I have an elk/moose hunt planned near Dawson Creek BC. with the inlaw and I've started making my list of bits and pieces.
Taking my FN98 in 8X63 Swede topped with a 2.5-10 4200. Not sure if I should stick with my tried and true load of 175gr. Sierra pro-hunters clocked at 2940fps or a new load of 196gr. Norma dual core at about 2800fps. also quite accurate and the bullets I got from Why Not so that alone should bring me luck.
My choice of two back up rifles....Brno 602 in 458WM topped with a 1-4X20 Vari XIII loaded with 300gr. Nosler partitions at a clocked 2800fps or a custom Parker Hale in 280AI No load for it yet topped with a Swarovski 3-12 x 50....The deer load I have for this one is 150gr win. PP at a clocked 2950fps but don't think that's the right bullet for elk and moose.
Taking my quad, closed in trailer, a freezer and gen. in case we get something...long ride back to Mb.
Not sure what to expect.....Any BC'ers what to chime in if you have hunted this area...Plan for the end of Sept to beginning of Oct. Should be fun, never hunted anywhere but Manitoba.

HEY! awesome to see that you are exploring my home turf!. I mostly hunt the late moose season near tumblr ridge WICKED fun!. I use a 30-06 Topped with a Redfield 3-9x50! loaded with factory loaded hornedy 180 gr SST's dropped last years moose at 75 yards in the thick stuff! I think your well set up! just remember to have fun. and be SAFE! any other questions in particular?

What's the weather like at the end of Sept.? Guessing there is no rule on hunter orange...Is 100yards or less the average shot. I know my inlaw will answer all my questions...Just getting a head start.

Could be hot or could be snow at that latitude. One thing about much of BC is that weather can be anything and change to anything within hours. No silly hunter orange laws, thankfully! Shots can go from 0-400 yds. I don't know many BC hunters that on;y plan on 100 yard shots. Even blacktail hunting in thick coastal jungle I've made shots of 300+ yards at times.

no huntet orange. the weather should hold out nice. expect anywhere from 19 to 27 as a high for the day. shot distance can be 10 yards to around 350 depended on where you are hunting!

If you are a flat-lander heading to Dawson Creek looking for mountains you will be disappointed. ;) LoL

BTW, Whatever works for you in Manitoba will work just as well in BC.

Bring bugg spray and oyetmint.
Grease yer bewts and tie the first lace over.
Good way tuh hewk yer gatterzs.

Don't lite yer chit awn fire and bern the forest down.

Them thar chewter's will dazzle them furr even if'n ya mizz.
They'll die awff sheer hart-oh-tack.

Leaf thuh Aqua Velva at howm.

Hmm, now that we know the trout pond will be unguarded it is time for a trip to Mb ;)
Russ, as has been mentioned bug spray and some warm weather clothes and some cooler weather stuff along with some gum boot just in case...
Good idea on the freezer and gennie too( just in case )
Enjoy and hope your bullets find the furry critter your aiming at .

It's pretty flat here....It won't take much of a hill to get me excited and out of breath from walking up it. lol! If you don't have to wear orange why on earth would you have to shoot 300 yards??? In camo you should be able to walk right up to them.

i Rarley take shots past 150

I'd take the Parker Hale...check the regs carefully for vehicle restrictions where you plan to hunt....lots of game in that general area...good luck and have fun! :)

No need to bring bug spray in late September. Little buggers all gone for the year.
Your in-law will likely want to at least show you a hill, so maybe hunt the hills into the Peace River. I always like them.
Or, Bull moose mountain is a better work out!

Yep. Us poor buggers out in SK and MB can't get within a mile of an animal because of hunter orange. So you will be amazed at being able to walk right up and boot the big elk or whatever it is you are hunting. :p

Have fun! Just went through Dawson Creek coming back from Whitehorse last week. Watch out for 80 ft. holiday trailers from Texas, as they are making the trek on the "Alaska Highway". :)

Lucky Sonnnabtch!!

Going to follow your thread mate and keep a tab on what your up too before the Big hunt, an then of course check back in for a bunch of photos and a hunt report!
I cant wait!

For a Backup rifle for Justin, id look at that 280 and get some 160gr loads worked out for atleast 2moa accuracy an throw it in the truck an see what happens!

Good luck with planning and enjoy the hunt in the Hunters Land

hey born an raised 3 Rd gen elk and moose hunter . In Dawson I'm thinking your going to have some typical wide open spaces and that 280 sounds like it should be your primary rifle . I shoot elk and moose out to 500 yards with my 264 with a 140 Amax all day long .and of course you might also need a close quarter timber gun .
300-500 shots the norm out here

This update is long in coming but here it is.....We had a good time and hunted hard for two weeks. Saw one cow elk and her calf, cow moose and calf...and a glimpse of a bull elk. But went home with an empty freezer. My flat lander legs just held up...one swelled up badly and later found out it was shin splints....Make sense as this is common in athletes. LOL!.
So I'm off to Chetwynd BC. in Sept. for another kick at the cat and was wondering how things have been hunting wise there....Plenty of moose and elk the last couple years??
Thinking of taking my TC pro hunter in 375H&H loaded with some old norma 270gr. dual cores running about 2900fps this time. Maybe it will bring me luck.

Russ...

I used to lived in Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, and Tumbler Ridge back on the 80's and 90's.

Dawson Creek is more prairie, and TR (1 hr away) is more mountainous.

From talking to friends who still live there, the best hunting is now further up the Alaska Hwy, past Ft St. John and the Pink Mtn area,
as the area between Dawson and Tumbler isn't as "wild" as it used to be, lots of gas wells, wind turbines etc.

When I was there, the Fellers Heights road between DC and TR had great Moose, Deer, Elk and Grouse Hunting,
not as good now from what I've been told.

I have great memories of hunting that road during the 16 years I lived there.

These days I work with a couple of guys who go up past Ft Nelson every year and bring back their moose.
Late Sept I believe.
