Flat magazine P14/M17 how is it done?

I've seen some sporterized P14/M17s with the magazine streamlined flat. How is this done? Do you loose any capacity?

I borrowed a jig on which the floor-plate was mounted with a couple of bolts coming through the guard screw holes. The dogs-leg in the front tang was heated red-hot and beat flat with a large hammer. The bolts kept the hole spacing right. Some filing and cleaning up and the guard was good to go.

The mag box height has to be reduced so everything fits. Capacity is reduced by one round and the trigger has to be shortened.

The belly mags are cut, then ground, placed in a flat jig and welded losing 1 rd mag capacity.........At least in my gunsmithing book............Harold

The most common way is what mbogo3 said, cut, weld, file. I've seen them beaten into shape, all the ones I've seen didn't turn out that well. Perhaps a fault with the way the technique was used. The later Rem 30 and 720 had flat magazine boxes, but no P14/M17's were ever made with them from the factory. - dan

After they were cut the existing trigger had to be shortened or switched with an 03 Springfield trigger...................Harold

Magazine capacity can be left the same. Straighten guard, and then use longer front guard screw.

The idea is to reduce the bulkiness of the receiver area making the gun more streamlined and pleasing to the eye

Another way is to use a Springfield trigger guard which makes for a very nice looking enfield
