Hi, Can one use .308 flat nose/round nose 150 or 170 grain bullets for a 308 win? Is this a .30 .30 round only ?

I have some bullets I would like to try "they were free" but I cannot find any load data or OAL data for these. I wouldn't want to try and find out without knowing if it's safe or not.

I would be using imr 4895 powder

thanks

Perfectly safe to fire in the 308. Just use 150 data for the 150's and 180 data for the 170's if you can't find 170 data.

For use on game these bullets may tend to be a little thin skinned so I would avoid close up shots if possible.

Fine to use though.

I'm not sure if the flat points used in the 307 win are the same as 30-30 bullets or if they're are designed for the 307. The 307 is a 308 with a rim.

Thanks guys.

I will just be using the bullets for plinking.

One other problem is that I cannot find oal data for these bullets. They seem really short how do I find out what a good seating depth would be ? I don't want to seat the bullets to shallow or to deep.

thanks again

I had lots of fun once, I loaded 170 grain 30-30 bullets as fast as I could make them fly, in a 3o-06. It was unbelievable to see what they did to a gallon can full of water with a lid on it!

Just set them up the same way as other bullets a few (.010" to .020") off the lands and your good to go. If your just plinking you can set them to just touch the lands if you want. The easiest way is to smoke a bullet in an empty case and close the action, when you see the marks of the rifling on the bullet you know how far to back off to get the depth you want.
