Has anyone ever taken the barnes x 300 grain (the one with the high BC) and seen how many grains of 4198 can be stuffed behind it,in the 458 lott..I'd like to start playing with them,I've been told they react like a heavier bullet because of longer softer bearing surface...Thoughts???Thanks

In my experience, when getting close to the maximum load with any particular cartridge, the velocity gains will drop off. Often therefore it is prudent to stop a little shy of maximum.
I do not have any loading experience with the Lott - I prefer bottle neck cases in bolt guns - but I think that you will find 2800 - 2850 fps will be near your maximum.
If you are going to the lighter bullet for flatter trajectory on medium game it should do well, but if you are looking for reduced recoil I think you'll be disappointed. Due to the increased powder load with the lighter bullet, the recoil will be similar to a heavy bullet load. In loading my .375 Ultra, a 260 gr bullet @ 2850 and a 380 gr bullet @ 2300 I found have similar recoil.

The barnes manual lists the 300 gr X-bullet to 2849 fps with a dose of 85 grains of H4198.
They also list the same bullet going almost 3100 fps out of a 460 Weatherby so it should hold up at Lott velocities. BTW it takes 124 grs of RL 19 to gain about 200 fps.

Well, they compete with cast bullets to 1000m. I am sure a jacketed bullet at elevated velocities will go at least that far.

PS the US army sent orig cast bullets to 3500yds when they first tested the 45-70 with black powder. The slug still blasted through 6 1" pine boards at that distance. 405 and 500gr bullets.

I have a buddy that brought the Barnes 300 up to 2600fps in a Ruger #1. Penetration did not seem impressive in the improvised tests we did. Recoil was fairly mild. I like the 350 grain Speer .458 a lot having put it through a few moose now.

Ya I've been wondering about that...The only reason I'm looking at the barnes is for trajectory superiority..As far as "What works" The 350 speer basically went stem to stern through that 2200lb eland I shot and held together fine, and lord knows you aint going to find tougher in north america...I would just like to get it that when in africa a fella could point and shoot out to 300 yds
