.... I need a "new" (higher magnification ) Spotting Scope. Anyone know how Canada Customs currently charges for one, used, bought cheaply, and shipped ? We're not talking anything like a super-duper , state of the art, Military Model here, just a straight , better than x25 'scope here ! Maybe if I get lucky, costing less than $50 US ! ...... What Customs charges? GST? Duty?

Depends on the value. They will charge GST on the item (if new), and duty only needs to be paid if it's made outside of NA.

I'm not sure if these rules apply if it's shipped by an individual...

Thanks ! That's about what I expected ! It's been a long time since I bought anything by mail from the US, then I really got "hosed" by UPS ,on a Motorcycle Safety Vest !! ..... David K.

Don't use UPS they charge crazzy rates for brokerage fee's, us USPS

..... For my money UPS should be charged with Robbery and Extortion ! .... Made my safety vest a very, very expensive item and one that my wife keeps making me pay for ! ...... David K.

UPS take a huge hidden handling fee/brokerage/screwing fee cut on all cross-border transactions - they usually cave-in though if/when it goes to collection and things start to get legal - because that $20.00+ adminstrative fee is embarassing for them to explain in public.

I received a letter from a collections agency today, apparantly I owed $22 to UPS. Called the number and it was for some car parts I ordered a few months ago. Got raped on fees in the first place (the shipper said they would use USPS, they used UPS, and my wife took the delivery). Though the fees were paid to the driver, apparently they wanted more. But no bill from UPS, no contact at all, the first asking for $ came from a collections agency, with a notice that 'if not paid in the next 10 days, your credit could be damaged, etc'.

Know what's crazy, this is the second letter I've ever received from a collections agency. The first was about two years ago, also after receiving a UPS package.

What kind of #### sucking ####ing company uses collection agencies rather than sending a bill?

I guess they must deal with a lot of disgruntled 'customers' and figure it's easier to play hardball right off the start.

A $140 package with UPS costs $40+? Just received a $9000 package from FedEx, brokerage fee, $7.

I ####ING HATE UPS. I'm generally against government intervention in almost anything, but I wish the govt would look into UPSs business practices.
