ok anyone ever use a thing called a flex hone to smooth out a pitted or rough shotgun or smoothbore muzzleloader?
its a tool looks like a bunch of little balls on a thin rod wich is spun with a electric drill. seen it on internet /ebay
used fer brake work /cylinders an such in various sizes. there is a version fer guns as well.
was thinking on using one on a old single shot 12g to smooth out the bore.
any one experianced in that? or tried it?
thanks.

I haven't tried it myself but I believe that there is a special oil that goes with it. If no one here is able to help you might want to call the tech guys at Brownells I noticed in their catalouge that they sell them.

As to the special oil, its generally kerosene with food colouring. Varsol works well to. It's more to float the particles of steel so that they don't clog up the abrasive than anything else. Let us know how it works:)

used them in work. The special oil recomended by the manafacturer was 10w30 .I dont know how much Brownell charges for this special oil ?.

for brake and clyinders we use a mix of wd40 and varsol. It also should be noted that ball hones for automotvie applications are not for smoothing out surfaces but actually roughing the surface in a cross hatch pattern to allow oil bond to the metal and. lubricate the seals and cylinder rings.

If you just want to brighten up the bore on an old shotgun then just use steelwool on the end of a shotgun cleaning rod and chuck it up in a drill
gives it almost a mirror finish

My point exactly.
Regular brake cly hones will leave a nice cross hatch pattern (if used correctly) I think that would fill nicely with lead and plastic. Special extra fine hones would be required. From my experience with engine and brake hones, kerosene type lubes cut very fast. Oils cut slower.

ok so if used on a rough muzzleloader smoothbore on say my old brown bess reproduction, , used fer mostly patched round ball or bird-shot .would it help un-rough the bore or not ??
as i said there is a version fer shotgun barrels...........like this.

True, but the one Brownells sells is finer than the fine automotive one.

exactly what i do;)

wrap steel wool around a brass brush and soak it with oil. push it in the barrel (should be very snug) and giver. cleans everything out and makes it look better than new...
