Flintlock rifle

you want a slow twist of around 6:68" for round ball. Compromise twists of 1:48 for .50 cal and up are very fussy about powder charges. They can be accurate but deviate from the accurate load and the accuracy falls off.
The heart of a flintlock is the lock. Siler or L&R locks are safe bets and in a general sense expect the lock alone to cost over $100. Almost any percussion lock will work reasonably well but a cheap flintlock is not worth squat.

I have the Austin and Halleck Mountain rifle in flint and like it, but I think the Lyman Great Plains rifle is of better quality. They both have a slow twist barrel of 1 in 66" that works well for a patched round ball.

Got all the parts I needed for my trade gun from Track of the Wolf in Minn. many years ago. Two guys from the U.S. we use to shoot with taught a Flintlock Rifle building course at the local university. Their only advice was don't work when your mad or not in the mood. It works....Bob

Hey Jigger..

Lyman makes the Great Plains Rifle that is a good round ball shooter (but the lock is hit or miss in my opinion)I have a Lyman flintlock and have replaced the factory lock with an L&R Drop in.
You never stated weather you was thinkin on a flint or Percussion. The percussion is an exellent shooter right out of the box.

I'm glad I posted this because I was ready to buy a flinter with a 1:48 twist, thinking for ball, this would be ideal. Thanks

thees nothing wrong with the 1-48 twist , just a smaller accuracy window, it will take a little experimenting but they shoot too, the senior getz put a bit on the american longrifles sight about this and he likes the 1-48 twist, i think quality components i.e. rice, green mtn , getz, barrels, l+r , siler locks, i wouldnt waste my money on italian replicas, wade

Just as important as rate of twist is the style of rifling--round ball barrels usually have deeper grooves than barrels designed for conicals.

FWIW, 44Bore

Also, the smaller the caliber, the faster a twist rate you can have and still shoot round ball accurately.

For example, a .45cal can stand a faster twist rate than a .50 cal and so on...
