Hey guys~I haven't had this beauty all that long, and I've only had it out to shoot one time...but noticed that the rear sight doesn't "stay up" on firing. I know it's a folding sight, but every folding sight I've seen/used in over 30 years stayed up until you wanted it down. In other words, as the shooter...I had the choice. lol I've taken 2 photos of the sight, one of it up, one in the position it's in after firing. I don't believe there is anything missing from the sight...but I also don't believe they're mean to actually work like this.

Any ideas?

YES...I've considered upgrading the sights and may one day..but the question is about these sights, and getting them working right. This gun won't see much use, so what little spare $ is laying around gets funnelled into the guns I use most.

Thanks (in advance) to anyone willing to chime-in, and offer some input! :)

The bottom of the leaf has an angle cut to it, maybe check that it may be reversed so not fitting the elevator properly
In the pic it looks like the pin for the leaf is not flush on one side, wonder if has been out for some reason?
Also maybe the tang doesn't have the proper down force on the elevator due to damage, maybe tweek it downward some ?

Thanks for the reply. That sounds totally reasonable, but the downward force seems to be more than sufficient. "Seems".

I just spent 20 minutes on Google looking to see if either the elevator, or sight itself is oriented incorrectly and according to what I see, it's correct. Something is definitely not as it should be though.

I’m thinking maybe the pin was removed with the leaf and elevator rather than taking the base off for scoping. There should have been a small piece of flat spring- 3/16x3/8 with a slight bend against the leaf.
Center the pin and a couple drops of epoxy will hold it up

Thanks for the reply 450yukon. Would you have a link/photo showing that part? I couldn't find hardly anything online, and usually when it's a problem a bunch of guys are having...you at least find discussions about it. lol

Hey guys~just revisiting this, as I can't find an exploded view of one of these rear sights. Hard to trouble-shoot if I can't tell whether or not something is missing. lol

I'm receptive to the idea of "upgrading" as well, though I don't actually mind the factory sights. Low-use (but well-loved) gun. :)

Skinner might be the obvious choice, but Marbles (sp?)...XS etc. What to choose? I actually don't care for peep sights that much, but owned one of the new Ruger PC Carbines for a short while and liked the sights on those, and even the short sight radius. (both sights on the barrel) Peep sights...but I got them to work well.

Do any of you Marlin 1895 owners have a set-up you'd care to post photos of, and share prices/details/links?

Thanks!

Maybe this will help, It doesn't look like you are missing any parts. I can't see from your pictures, but from the parts I have the sight is kept from flopping by the sight bar being bent downward to put pressure on the ramp and then the little fin in the middle of the buckhorn engages the ramp and puts pressure on the sight when your raise it. Is that little fin broken or ground down on yours??

Hey Wapiti~after some delay, I finally took some detailed photos of the sight, and was relieve to see I didn't need to drift it out. That tab is completely missing on my rear sight, broken-off/gone...whatever. That simply has to be the reason this is happening, but your photos are the only thing that helped me diagnose the difference between yours (fine) and mine. (not functioning) I messaged you directly, but have posted the photos below to illustrate what I noticed today.

Thanks again everyone, now I'm on the lookout for a factory rear sight. Has to be one out there...with all you guys upgrading to Skinner/XS! :)

Wapiti~you're the man. Thanks again.
