My old Maverick fell victim to a flood while I was on vacation. I didn't get home till a couple days later so it was rusted to pieces. I recently sanded the barrel to a wicked shine (2000 grit) with intentions of cold blueing. However, I kinda like the look of it as it is but it has zero protection from rust right now.

I was thinking about using an automotive clearcoat to protect the metal but I'm thinking I can get a better shine by polishing it with metal polish then using car wax to keep out the moisture. I also thought about using the metal polish then clearcoat but I'm afraid the clear wouldn't bond properly with the polish on the metal. I'm also worried about the clearcoat yellowing with time.

Any thoughts?

check out armacoat. They make a clear coat recommended for guns, actually designed for guns. Owner goes by murdock here on gunnutz.
