today,..I think I shot the flukiest group of my entire life....3 shots at 200 meters went .395"....
now,..I know lots of you internet shooters can shoot 3/8" at 300 yards regularly, never mind 200 meters..but my rifles, nor my shooting are that accurate,...so, for me,..this is a fluke...the following group was 1.10"......rifle was a Sako AI Hunter in 17 Remington in a McMillan stock with 4-12X Leupold.......20gr VMax and 19grs of 4198....
 
The temp was right, there was no wind ...if you put the crosshairs in the same spot each time it's good shooting, not a fluke! Your second group was under 1/2 MOA. Good shooting.

17 Rem... my favorite gopher gun... shot a heavy barreled (Shilen stainless) on an old small Sako action for years with a 10 power Lyman with a 1/4 inch dot. It weighed 10 pounds and you could see your hits. It shot consistently in the .3's and .4's with 5 shots. I could shoot 50 rounds with very little fouling. Nothing beats it for flatness and beating the wind out to 250 yards. Bullet is moving so fast and it's so small the wind doesn't have much to push on. At 200 yards it drifted about half of what a .222 did with 50 grain bullets.

You will love that rifle.

I'd like to point out that I was right beside Rembo when he did this - this is no joke. We just met at the range today - and I'm thankful that my shooting mate informed me that 2 of the spent casings from my SKS hit Rembo in the head when he sat down two benches over... I apologized promptly but I still felt like an ass - and promptly moved.

Like I said at the range, that's a group you clip out and save - then go home, have a beer, and start telling stories! :D

Glad to see such a nice group settle in for such a quality guy.

I once shot a 3/4" 3 shot with a 700 mtn rifle in 260 Rem, with 120gr matchkings - at 300 meters (328y I think). Had a witness too. Funniest thing is that gun and load was averaging around 1.5" @ 100 meters :D

I'm still having trouble maintaining consistent minute-of-tim's-cup at a hundred yards (and I load on a single-stage :eek:), so you're doing just fine. :)
 
Getting hit by a case out of an SKS is better than getting hit with the other end of the round...:D..even a 7.62x39 might hurt...I didn't feel anything hit my head but one bounced off my jacket...no worries,..I've been hit by fired cases out of better guns than an SKS:D:p

This was only the 2nd time I've shot that rifle and the other 200 meter group was 1.10"..so an average of .748" for two groups...this was with new unfired brass and the first load I threw together for the rifle. Groups at 100 meters hovered right around an inch. I'm going to neck size some brass and try the same load again.

Dennis...you've got me thinking now, I need another small Sako action to build a heavy barrel 17....:rolleyes:..do you have a 17 Rem reamer?..who makes a good 17 barrel in Canada?

as for keeping them on a Tim's cup at 100...maybe try picking up an empty Tim's cup...the stuff inside when consumed enroute to the range has the ability to affect group size...:D..usually not in a good way either....:rolleyes:

I am going to make a good effort to eliminate some gophers this summer and I had all the varmint rifles out for a check over and sight in....the CZ 221 Fireball shot better groups at 100m than the 17 but the 200m groups weren't as good,..the heavy barrel 700's in 223 and 22-250 aren't stellar performers but to me "load development" is a foreign concept..if it shoots under an inch I'm good to go....I think maybe I should rebarrel the 223 to 17 and the 22-250 to 260 Rem.....
 
Congratulations, feels good to get a good group.

I was working with one of my rifles yesterday trying to get a good looking five shot group and it seemed like I'd keep getting one or two straying off a little.

I'm pretty certain my rifles are capable of better groups than I can do.
 
Excellent shooting. 17's can be quite accurate, but it helps to have a good shot behind the trigger.
 
Good shooting!! Great when it all comes together. A couple of my best, the first was a three shot group of 0.486", using Sierra 117gr SBT's in my 25-06, shot at 185 yds and witnessed by hs4570. The second, a three shot group of 0.168", using Hornady 50gr V-MAX in my 219 DW and shot at 100 yds.
 
The first group might have been a fluke but the second group proves that you've got a good rifle, good round and a good shooter. Two groups under 1/2 MOA is great IMO.
