Fluxing lead

hi there, i look a store in canada that it sells powder for fluxing lead , like Marvelux Flux or frankford arsenal fluxing compound.

i did many searchs by google, but no result

Not by any means a real cast guy, but there are many things that are cheap to the point of being free, you can use to flux.

Lots of casters will be along to offer their experiences.

I bought a 1kg tub of boric acid form shoppers Drug mart. Ask the druggist.

Boric acid is great for saving your tin. I also drop a pea sized chunk of bee's wax on top.

I use a 1/4 inch thick piece of candle

I've tried borax, a little wax but a table spoon of plain old sawdust seems to works just as fine. The dross really seems to stick to the charred wood and carbon

Pine shavings here. True flux as it will remove impurities. Wax only puts the oxidized tin back in the mix.

I used to use Marvelux, until some one told be about just stirring the lead with a stick. Doesn't get much easier than that.

Sawdust and wax. Leave about 1/4" of char on top hoping it will retain heat better. Plus it prevents splashes as lead is dropped in.

I use too wax and saw dust. I love how the wax makes the surface smooth and shiny like a mirror. The only downside I find with fluxing is the darn smoke. Dang it it smokes and smokes and more smoke. But at the end of the day as long the alloy is kept clean is all worth it.

Toss a lit match in to get rid of the smoke.

I use wax from cheap tea light candles from the dollar store and follow with saw dust.

Stirring with a piece of cedar shingle then sawdust on top. Make sure the shingle/stick is dry!

Small piece of any cheap candle, or a dash of free sawdust, works for me !

I won't use candle anymore. The smoke is ok but it lets a yellow grease on the surface and when is all evaporated the yellow thing sticks on pot walls. I have to scrub it with a brass brush.
