Hi Guys,

We're thinking of doing a fly-in moose hunt for 2010. I'm going to start gathering info now, and am wondering if you guys can let me know about you're own experiences. Where you've flown-in, costs, recommendations and results would be very appreciated.

Many thanks!

I use to live in Nakina, so I'm partial to these guys

Other than the cost, I believe that the biggest concern is getting tags for your moose, I've heard that Ont. Outfitters save tags for U.S. hunters as they are willing to pay alot more.

I got an outfitter bull tag last year from Pennock's. It was a win/win situation. He needed to get rid of the tag (It's a use it this year or lose it next year for outfitters). And I needed one. The stipulation is that you must be a guest of that outfitter for it to be valid. It is only valid during the duration of your stay. Else it's a regular calf tag. Mind you, if you luck out and go to another area, it is still valid as a calf tag.

If you plan on using an outfitter, ask about the outfitter tags. As far as I am concerned, by charging two different prices is bad business. One cost across the board, no matter who's paying.

If you live in Ontario and thats were you are hunting you can apply for your own tags and use the facility's of the outfitters without any problems. Most of the outfitters can't get enough tags to keep them busy anyways. I am flying in this year and thats what I am doing. Hope this helps! Not to mention with the economy the way it is down there I don't think there will be as many up here this year as normal, or as many of us up there with gas at 1.38 today.

I must admit that I've never heard of anyone "flying-in" for a moose  From what I hear, Newfoundland is crawling with them, big ones too. Why not hook up with a nice friendly Newfie (they're all friendly by my experience) and spend the money to go to the Rock :D

My wifes cousin runs an outfit up north. We go there for fishing once a year. Have not moose hunted, but I know the owner goes out most years with a hunting party. You can find more information about the company here;

I've spoken with some outfitters. A lot of these guys have cabins on remote lakes that they fly you to. They come with tags, and generally the packages for the full meal deal is between 2-3k per man. (Big American draw)
Not interested in that so much. We hunt moose in Ontario every year and draw our own tags, so we just want to charter a flight 100-200 miles into the remote wilderness and rough it old school for a week. (Before our guys are too old and fat to attempt something like this!)

Air fare for this is currently costing about 6 bucks an air mile.
So, we plan to find a spot where we will draw tags, and then find a plane to charter us in, and that way our costs stay reasonable. (All young fathers in the gang, so budgets are a concern)

We've been hunting Hearst and Caramat, before that we we're hunting in the Sturgeon Falls area.
I'm wondering how the moose hunting is along the western coast? (Wawa, Thunder Bay etc)
Anyone hunt out that way?

Thanks for the info provided guys! Very helpful.

I used to guide fishing about 60 miles North of Wawa for some old time family friends. Their camp was pretty nice with lots of big moose around ( in 1988 ) they also had an air service out of White River that had a bunch of remote outposts all over the area. Send me a PM if you want the name, I am not sure of their rated and such but I believe they have a web page.

44fordy, check your pm's.

One of the suggestions you have received is NOT good, from my personal and highly painful experience.
